Planting Guidance
Hedge Planting
A well-planted hedge has a much better chance of establishing quickly and growing into a healthy, attractive screen. Prepare the planting area thoroughly, space plants correctly and water generously after planting.
Whether you choose bare root, cell-grown, pot-grown or root ball hedging, keeping the roots moist and the planting area weed-free during establishment is essential.
Top Tips for Planting
Prepare the Ground
Clear weeds and competing vegetation before planting.
Allow Enough Space
Follow the recommended spacing for your chosen plant variety.
Plant at the Correct Depth
Use the original soil level on the plant as a guide.
Firm the Soil
Gently firm the soil around the roots to remove air pockets.
Water Thoroughly
Water immediately after planting and continue regularly during dry conditions.
Mulch & Maintain
Apply a suitable mulch to help retain moisture and reduce weed growth.
Preparing Your Planting Area
Good preparation provides the foundation for healthy plant establishment. Remove perennial weeds and loosen compacted soil before planting. Where necessary, improve the soil with suitable organic matter and check that drainage is adequate.
Avoid planting when the ground is heavily waterlogged, frozen or excessively dry. Giving your plants the right conditions from the beginning can make a significant difference to their long-term performance.
Bare Root Planting
Bare root plants should ideally be planted as soon as possible after delivery while they are dormant.
If immediate planting is not possible, keep the roots protected from drying winds and ensure they remain moist. For longer periods, plants can be temporarily heeled into suitable soil until permanent planting is possible.
When planting, spread the roots naturally, plant to the appropriate depth and gently firm the soil around them.
Caring for Newly Planted Plants
The first few months are particularly important for newly planted trees, shrubs and hedging.
Watering
New plants need consistent moisture while their root systems establish. Water deeply and regularly during dry weather, paying particular attention during spring and summer.
Weed Control
Grass and weeds compete with new plants for water and nutrients. Keep the area around the base of your plants clear, particularly during the early establishment period.
Mulching
A suitable mulch can help retain moisture, suppress weeds and regulate soil conditions around the roots. Keep mulch away from direct contact with plant stems.
Protection
Young plants may require protection from rabbits, other wildlife, strong winds or severe weather. Use appropriate guards and supports where necessary.
Looking After Plants in Pots
Container-grown plants need regular attention because their root systems have limited access to moisture and nutrients.
Keep pots adequately watered, particularly during warm or dry periods, while ensuring excess water can drain away. Position plants according to their light requirements and protect vulnerable containers from extreme weather where necessary.
Regular feeding and occasional repotting may also be required as plants grow.
Common Planting Problems
Plants Not Establishing
Poor establishment can be caused by inadequate watering, poor soil preparation, root damage, competition from weeds or unsuitable planting conditions.
Yellowing or Leaf Loss
Some plants can naturally lose leaves or show signs of stress after planting as they adjust to their new environment. Check watering, drainage and exposure before taking further action.
Wind Damage
Newly planted trees and hedging can be vulnerable to movement in exposed locations. Appropriate staking or support can help prevent root disturbance while plants establish.
Frost Damage
Young plants can be more vulnerable to severe frost. Protect susceptible plants where necessary and check that frost movement has not loosened the soil around the roots.
