Cherry Laurel Caucasica Hedge (Prunus laurocerasus 'Caucasica')

Cherry Laurel Caucasica Plants Description

Cherry Laurel Caucasica Hedge Plants (Prunus laurocerasus 'Caucasica') are evergreen shrubs with large, glossy dark green leaves and a naturally dense, bushy habit. The foliage remains throughout the year, providing consistent structure and screening when used as a hedge.

In spring, Cherry Laurel Caucasica produces upright spikes of small white flowers, which can attract bees and other pollinating insects. These are followed by clusters of dark red to black fruit later in the year. The seed kernels are harmful if eaten, so the fruit should not be consumed.

The dense growth of Caucasica makes it suitable for substantial hedges and screening. It can be maintained at the required height with regular pruning, while its upright branches help create a full hedge as the plants mature.

Cherry Laurel Caucasica grows well in moist but well-drained soil and can tolerate full sun or partial shade. It adapts to clay, loam and sandy soils, although shallow chalky soils can cause chlorosis.

Pruning Advice

Cherry Laurel Caucasica should be allowed to establish before regular shaping begins. Young plants can receive light formative pruning to encourage a dense, well-branched hedge and help establish the desired shape.

For established hedges, carry out the main pruning in late spring or early summer, removing unwanted growth and maintaining the required height and width. A light trim later in the summer can be carried out if needed to keep the hedge tidy.

Because Cherry Laurel has large leaves, pruning individual stems with secateurs or loppers can give a cleaner appearance than cutting across the foliage with hedge shears. Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches at the same time.

Avoid cutting the hedge back excessively into old wood unless substantial renovation is necessary. When pruning, check for active bird nests and delay the work where required.

Further Information

Cherry Laurel Caucasica Hedge plants are currently available as pot-grown plants in a range of sizes. Planting density depends on the size and format of the plants selected.

For the current range, recommended densities include 4–5 plants per metre for 2L 40/60cm plants, 2 plants per metre for 2L 60/80cm plants, 2–3 plants per metre for 7.5L 80/100cm plants, and 2 plants per metre for 7.5L 100/125cm plants. Larger 10L plants are available at densities ranging from 2–4 plants per metre, depending on the size selected.

Cherry Laurel Caucasica grows best in moist but well-drained soil and performs well in full sun or partial shade. Water newly planted hedges thoroughly and keep them well watered while they establish, particularly during dry periods.

Once established, regular pruning can be used to maintain the hedge at the desired height and width. Allow sufficient space for the plants to develop their natural width when planning the planting position.
