Compact Laurel Hedge (Prunus laurocerasus 'Otto Luyken')

Compact Laurel Plants Description

Compact Laurel is a useful evergreen hedging choice where a lower, more compact hedge is preferred. The 'Otto Luyken' cultivar has a bushy, spreading habit and dense, narrow foliage that provides year-round structure without the larger scale associated with standard Cherry Laurel.

Its glossy dark-green leaves give the hedge a consistent appearance throughout the seasons. In spring, small white flowers with a strong fragrance appear above the foliage, adding seasonal interest before the plant develops its cherry-like fruits, which mature from red to glossy black.

Compact Laurel grows well in full sun or partial shade and is adaptable to chalk, clay, loam and sandy soils. Good drainage is important, with the plant preferring moist but well-drained conditions.

Its naturally compact growth makes it particularly suitable for low hedging, garden borders and areas where space is limited. With regular pruning, it can be kept within the desired height and shape while retaining its evergreen coverage.

Our Compact Laurel range is available as both root-ball and pot-grown plants in a selection of sizes. Planting densities vary according to the plant size and format, so check the individual product listing when planning the number of plants required.

Pruning Advice

Compact Laurel responds well to pruning and can be shaped to maintain a neat, defined hedge. For established hedges, pruning in late spring or early summer is suitable and follows the plant's normal pruning period.

Regular trimming can help maintain the compact form and encourage an even appearance. Avoid unnecessary heavy cutting when a light trim is sufficient to maintain the required height and shape.

Further Information

Compact Laurel 'Otto Luyken' is particularly useful where you want evergreen structure without allowing a hedge to become excessively tall. Its naturally low, spreading growth makes it suitable for smaller gardens, borders and low screening.

The current range includes root-ball plants from 20/40cm to 60/80cm and pot-grown plants in 2L, 5L and 7.5L sizes.

The product listings provide the recommended planting density for each size, ranging from 3–4 plants per metre for larger root-ball plants to 5 plants per metre for smaller options.

When planting Compact Laurel, choose a position in full sun or partial shade with well-drained soil. Water newly planted hedging regularly while it establishes, particularly during dry periods.

Plant Safety: The seed kernels of Compact Laurel are harmful if eaten. Take care when handling the plant, and keep it away from pets that may chew or ingest plant material.
