Copper Beech Pleached Tree Description

The Copper Beech Pleached Tree, botanically known as Fagus sylvatica ‘Purpurea’, combines the attractive characteristics of Copper Beech with a carefully trained framework designed to provide elevated screening and architectural structure.

Pleaching involves training branches horizontally across a supporting framework to form a raised canopy. This distinctive structure makes the tree particularly useful where privacy is required above a wall, fence or existing boundary without taking up excessive ground space.

One of the main attractions of the Copper Beech is its foliage. New leaves emerge in shades of deep purple and copper before developing into rich bronze and greenish purple tones as the season progresses. The dense foliage creates an impressive visual display and provides effective screening during the growing season.

As autumn approaches, the foliage develops warmer copper and brown tones before falling. Like Common Beech, Copper Beech can retain some dry leaves during winter, particularly on younger growth and in sheltered locations.

This can provide additional seasonal screening after the main leaf fall.

The structured form of a Copper Beech Pleached Tree makes it suitable for formal gardens, modern landscaping, driveway borders, terraces and garden boundaries.

Several trees can be positioned together to create a continuous elevated screen.

Because the tree has already been trained into a defined shape, regular maintenance is important. New shoots should be managed to preserve the established canopy and prevent the framework from becoming untidy.

Pruning Advice

Regular pruning helps maintain the clean, structured appearance of a Copper Beech Pleached Tree. The aim is to preserve the established framework while controlling new growth that extends beyond the desired canopy.

Remove shoots that grow outside the trained structure and guide suitable new growth along the framework where necessary. Light, regular maintenance is generally easier than allowing excessive growth to develop before carrying out corrective pruning.

Dead, damaged or crossing branches should be removed when required. Take care not to cut into the main framework unnecessarily, as this can affect the shape of the pleached canopy.

The frequency of pruning depends on the growth rate and the level of formality required. A more formal screen will usually need more frequent trimming to maintain clean lines.

For larger trees or installations where pruning requires working at height, professional tree care can help ensure maintenance is carried out safely.

Further Information

Rich Copper Foliage: The distinctive purple, bronze and copper tones of the foliage provide strong colour and contrast within garden planting schemes.

Privacy Screening: The elevated canopy is ideal for creating privacy above existing walls, fences and boundaries.

Formal Structure: Its trained horizontal framework creates a neat architectural appearance that suits both contemporary and traditional landscapes.

Seasonal Interest: Copper Beech provides changing foliage colour throughout spring, summer and autumn, with some leaves potentially remaining into winter.

Space Efficient Screening: The raised canopy provides useful screening without requiring the ground space needed by a naturally spreading mature tree.

Versatile Garden Use: Copper Beech Pleached Trees can be used along boundaries, driveways, terraces and other areas where structured planting is required.
