Griselinia Hedge Plants Description

Griselinia thrives when trimmed to shape and rapidly establishes a mature hedge. While female plants may occasionally produce tiny yellow flowers and small purple berries, these are considered insignificant and non-toxic to both people and animals.

With an average growth rate of approximately 20-40 cm per annum, Griselinia is relatively easy to maintain, making it an excellent choice for a low-maintenance evergreen hedge (though all hedges require some level of upkeep). It prefers well-drained soil and is particularly well-suited to seaside gardens.

Pruning Advice

Griselinia littoralis is an excellent low-maintenance evergreen hedge plant, with pruning requirements varying according to the age of the hedge.

For newly planted hedges established during the winter months, preliminary pruning may be undertaken in spring following planting, with additional pruning in spring over the subsequent couple of years. As the hedge matures, Griselinia can be pruned annually in summer to maintain its desired shape.

Pruning is relatively straightforward and primarily involves removing dead, damaged, or diseased shoots, along with general trimming to achieve the desired shape. As Griselinia is a less formal hedge, it does not require extensive pruning. Garden shears are typically sufficient for this task, although a hedge trimmer may be more practical for larger hedges.

After pruning, applying mulch or a general-purpose fertiliser can be beneficial, aiding the plant’s recovery and overall health.

It is essential to inspect the hedge for any potential nesting sites before commencing pruning, particularly when using electric trimmers.
