Griselinia Hedge Plants Description

Griselinia littoralis, commonly known as New Zealand Privet, is a versatile evergreen hedging plant with glossy apple-green leaves and dense, attractive growth. It is an excellent choice for creating year-round privacy, screening and garden boundaries.

A Griselinia hedge is particularly popular in coastal and exposed areas, where its hardy nature makes it a reliable choice for UK gardens. It grows well in normal, clay and chalk soils, provided they are reasonably well drained, and performs in full sun to partial shade.

With an average growth rate of around 20-40cm per year, Griselinia can be maintained at approximately 1-6m, making it suitable for both low and taller evergreen hedges. Its neat foliage and easy-to-manage growth also make Griselinia littoralis hedge plants a practical option for gardeners looking for an attractive, low-maintenance screen.

Pruning Advice

Griselinia littoralis is relatively easy to prune and does not require intensive maintenance. Young hedges can be lightly trimmed during spring to encourage bushier growth, while established Griselinia hedging plants can generally be pruned in summer to maintain their shape and height.

Remove any dead, damaged or unwanted growth when necessary. Hand shears are suitable for smaller hedges, while a hedge trimmer can make maintaining larger hedges quicker and easier.
Always check the hedge carefully for nesting birds before pruning.

Further Information

For the best results, use the recommended planting density shown in the product grid for your chosen size and root type. As a general guide, bare root plants can be planted at approximately 3-7 plants per metre, while cell-grown plants can be spaced at around 4-6 plants per metre.

For a fuller Griselinia littoralis hedge, consider planting in a double staggered row or zig-zag pattern. This can help create a thicker screen as the plants mature.
