Crimson Sentry Norway Maple Ornamental Tree (Acer Platanoides 'Crimson Sentry')

Crimson Sentry Norway Maple Ornamental Tree Description

The Crimson Sentry Norway Maple is a striking deciduous tree that brings bold colour and architectural interest to garden landscapes.

Also known as Acer platanoides 'Crimson Sentry', this cultivar is valued for its upright, columnar growth and distinctive dark red-purple leaves.

Its deeply coloured foliage emerges in spring and retains much of its rich burgundy-purple appearance throughout summer.

As autumn arrives, the leaves may develop attractive orange and yellow tones before falling.

Small yellow-green flowers appear in spring, adding seasonal interest, while the tree's winged seeds develop later in the year.

Reaching approximately 8–12 metres tall at maturity, Crimson Sentry has a more upright profile than many other Norway Maple varieties.

Although its relatively narrow shape makes it useful where horizontal space is limited, it still requires sufficient room for its mature height, canopy and roots.

This purple-leaved ornamental tree works particularly well as a standalone garden feature, in larger borders or as part of a structured landscape design.

Its rich foliage contrasts beautifully with green shrubs, lighter planting and flowering perennials, creating an eye-catching focal point through the growing season.

Pruning Advice

The Crimson Sentry Norway Maple is relatively low-maintenance and generally requires minimal pruning to retain its naturally upright shape.

Regular trimming is unnecessary unless you need to remove damaged growth or address structural issues.

Maples can bleed sap when pruned during periods of active sap flow. Avoid routine pruning in late winter and early spring. If pruning is necessary, choose a suitable period in summer or autumn, using clean, sharp tools to remove dead, damaged or crossing branches.

Where possible, retain the central leader to preserve the tree's characteristic columnar form.

Avoid excessive cutting, as heavy pruning can affect its natural shape and long-term growth.

For significant work on a mature tree, seek advice from a qualified tree professional.

Further Information

Upright Growth Habit: The naturally columnar form of Crimson Sentry Norway Maple creates a strong vertical feature without the broad canopy of many other maples. It is suitable for structured gardens and landscapes where height is desired.

Rich Purple Foliage: Its deep burgundy-purple leaves provide striking contrast against green foliage and lighter-coloured planting, adding depth and visual interest to the garden.

Seasonal Interest: From fresh spring growth to rich summer foliage and warmer autumn tones, this deciduous maple offers changing colour throughout the year.

Wildlife Support: Its spring flowers can provide nectar and pollen for visiting insects. The tree's branches and canopy may also offer shelter for birds and other small wildlife.

Hardy and Adaptable: This hardy ornamental maple grows in a range of soil types and can tolerate typical UK growing conditions. Good drainage and appropriate watering during establishment help support healthy growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is Crimson Sentry Norway Maple suitable for a small garden?

Crimson Sentry has a narrower growth habit than many broad-canopied trees, making it worth considering for gardens with limited width. However, it can reach 8–12 metres tall at maturity, so allow sufficient room for its height, roots and eventual canopy.

2. How far apart should you plant Crimson Sentry Norway Maples?

Spacing depends on the intended planting design and the size of the trees at maturity. For individual specimen planting, allow room for the canopy to develop without overcrowding nearby trees, buildings or boundaries. Consider the expected mature spread when planning a group or avenue.

3. Does Crimson Sentry Norway Maple lose its leaves in winter?

Yes. Crimson Sentry is deciduous, meaning its leaves turn colour and fall in autumn. The tree remains bare during winter before producing fresh purple foliage in spring.

4. Can Crimson Sentry Norway Maple grow in clay soil?

Yes. Crimson Sentry can grow in clay soil, provided it is reasonably well-drained. Avoid areas where water remains around the roots for extended periods, as waterlogged soil can affect tree health and establishment.

5. How long does Crimson Sentry Norway Maple take to mature?

Crimson Sentry is a moderate-growing tree. Under suitable conditions, it may take around 10–20 years to reach maturity. Its growth rate and final dimensions depend on soil quality, available space, climate and ongoing care.
