Escallonia Rubra Macanthra Hedge Plants Description

Escallonia rubra macrantha, also known as Escallonia Red, is well-suited for most soils and environments, especially coastal areas, but it is not tolerant of shade or extremely cold conditions. This variety is relatively fast-growing, adding approximately 30 to 45 cm per year. For best results, prune after flowering to maintain its shape. We offer both the Rubra Macrantha and Donard Radiance varieties.

Pruning Advice

General hedge trimming should be done right after flowering. Escallonia also benefits from a more substantial prune in early spring, around April to May.

Further Information

Planting distances are largely a matter of preference. For bare root plants, spacing them at 3 plants per meter is sufficient, 5 plants is optimal, and 7 plants in a double staggered row will result in a denser hedge more quickly. Generally, smaller plants should be planted at a higher density. For cell-grown plants, spacing at 4 plants per meter in a single row or ideally 6 plants per meter in a staggered row is recommended.
