Flamingo Willow Ornamental Tree Description

The Flamingo Willow Ornamental Tree is a compact deciduous tree valued primarily for its unusual and colourful foliage.

Also known as Salix integra ‘Hakuro Nishiki’, it can reach approximately 1.5 to 2.5 metres in height and width, making it considerably more manageable than many larger willow species.

Its most distinctive feature is the changing colour of its new growth. In spring, young leaves emerge with attractive pink tones before gradually developing into a combination of creamy white and green.

This variegated foliage creates a soft, dappled appearance that brings contrast and seasonal interest to planting schemes.

The Flamingo Willow has a naturally rounded and graceful habit, making it an effective specimen plant for lawns, borders and patios.

Standard forms can also create an attractive focal point near entrances, seating areas or other prominent parts of the garden.

Small yellow catkins appear in spring, although the foliage is the main ornamental feature. The tree is deciduous, meaning it loses its leaves during autumn before entering its winter dormant period.

Its relatively compact size makes it suitable for gardens where a larger ornamental tree would be difficult to accommodate.

For the strongest foliage colour, plant the Flamingo Willow in full sun. It can tolerate some light shade, but brighter conditions generally encourage more vibrant new growth.

Consistent moisture is also important because willows naturally perform best when their roots have reliable access to water.

Pruning Advice

Regular pruning is an important part of caring for a Flamingo Willow. Cutting the plant back encourages fresh shoots, which are responsible for much of the attractive pink and variegated foliage.

The main pruning can be carried out in late winter or early spring. Remove dead, damaged or unwanted branches and reduce suitable young growth to maintain a neat, balanced shape.

A firm annual prune can also encourage a flush of new shoots with stronger colour.

A lighter trim during the growing season can help maintain the desired shape and encourage additional colourful growth.

Avoid allowing the plant to become overly dense, as removing some crowded or crossing branches can improve airflow around the canopy.

If your Flamingo Willow is grown as a standard tree, check the clear stem regularly for shoots appearing below the graft.

These should be removed promptly so they do not compete with the ornamental top growth.

Watering is particularly important after pruning and during periods of warm or dry weather. Container grown Flamingo Willows can dry out more quickly than plants growing in the ground, so check the compost regularly and water thoroughly when needed.

Further Information

Colourful Foliage: Fresh growth develops attractive pink tones before maturing into cream and green variegated leaves, giving the tree its distinctive Flamingo appearance.

Compact Growth: With an eventual size of around 1.5 to 2.5 metres, it can be used in smaller gardens where space is limited.

Moisture Loving: The Flamingo Willow performs particularly well in consistently moist soil and is well suited to positions near ponds or other areas where moisture is readily available.

Container Friendly: Standard forms can be grown in large containers provided they receive sufficient water and suitable growing conditions.

Seasonal Interest: Pink spring growth, variegated summer foliage and its graceful structure provide changing visual interest throughout the year.

Hardy in the UK: Salix integra ‘Hakuro Nishiki’ has an RHS hardiness rating of H5, meaning it is suitable for most UK gardens.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Flamingo Willow suitable for a small garden?

Yes. Its relatively compact mature size makes it suitable for smaller gardens, borders and patios. Regular pruning can also help maintain the shape and size of the plant.

Why is my Flamingo Willow losing its pink colour?

The pink colouring is strongest on fresh new growth. As the leaves mature, they naturally develop more cream and green tones. Regular pruning encourages new shoots and can therefore help produce another flush of colourful foliage.

Does a Flamingo Willow need lots of water?

It needs consistently moist soil and should not be allowed to dry out for extended periods. Pay particular attention during warm, dry weather and when growing the tree in a container, as pots can lose moisture quickly.

Can I grow a Flamingo Willow in a pot?

Yes. Flamingo Willows can be grown successfully in large containers, particularly standard forms. Use a suitable growing medium and make sure the plant receives regular watering throughout the growing season.

When should I prune a Flamingo Willow?

The main prune is generally carried out in late winter or early spring. This encourages fresh new growth and helps maintain the tree's compact, attractive shape. A lighter summer trim can also be used where additional shaping or new growth is required.
