Tufted Hair Grass Description

Deschampsia cespitosa, commonly known as Tufted Hair Grass, is a graceful ornamental grass valued for its fine foliage and airy flower heads. The delicate flowering stems rise above the foliage, creating an attractive cloud like appearance and gentle movement in the breeze.

This tufted hair ornamental grass is ideal for adding height and softness to planting schemes without creating a dense or heavy appearance. It works particularly well alongside flowering perennials, other ornamental grasses and naturalistic plants.

Tufted Hair Grass is also well suited to informal and prairie inspired gardens. Its fine texture provides contrast against broader leaves and stronger forms, while the flowering stems add useful seasonal structure.

Pruning Advice

The airy flower heads can be left standing through autumn and winter to provide additional structure and visual interest.

Cut back the old foliage and flowering stems in late winter or early spring before fresh growth begins.

Use clean, sharp shears when cutting back the plant and remove any damaged or untidy material. This helps maintain a neat clump while encouraging fresh seasonal growth.
