Escallonia Pink Hedge (Escallonia 'Apple Blossom')

Escallonia Apple Blossom is a hardy evergreen plant that works particularly well as a flowering hedge. Its dense growth produces a useful screen, while its glossy foliage provides year-round interest.

During the flowering season, the plant produces attractive clusters of pink and white flowers that contrast beautifully with its dark green leaves. The flowers also provide a valuable source of nectar for pollinating insects.

Pink Escallonia is adaptable to a range of conditions and can grow in normal, chalk and clay soils. It performs best in a sunny or partially shaded position with well-drained soil, although it can tolerate exposed and coastal locations.

With its evergreen foliage, manageable growth rate and attractive flowers, Escallonia hedge plants are well suited to garden boundaries, screening and informal or regularly maintained hedges.

Pruning Advice

Escallonia Apple Blossom responds well to regular pruning, making it easier to maintain as a neat and attractive hedge.
The best time for heavier pruning is after flowering, generally towards the end of summer. Remove overgrown, damaged or unwanted branches to maintain the desired shape and encourage healthy new growth.

For a lightly maintained hedge, trimming once a year may be sufficient. More frequent trimming can be carried out when a tidier, more formal appearance is required.

Avoid cutting too heavily into old wood unless necessary, as this can reduce the plant's ability to produce fresh growth.

Further Information

When planting an Escallonia hedge, spacing will depend on the size of the plants and how quickly you want the hedge to become dense.

For bare-root plants:

3 plants per metre: Suitable where a wider spacing is preferred.
5 plants per metre: An ideal spacing for creating a good hedge.
7 plants per metre: A double-staggered row can create a denser hedge more quickly.

For cell-grown plants, approximately 4 plants per metre can be used in a single row, while 6 plants per metre in a staggered row can help create a fuller hedge.

When deciding on planting density, consider the size of the plants supplied, the available space and how quickly you want the hedge to fill out.
