Japanese Forest Grass Description

Hakonechloa macra, commonly known as Japanese Forest Grass, is a graceful ornamental grass prized for its elegant, arching foliage and flowing habit. Unlike upright grasses, its leaves gently cascade towards the ground, creating a soft and relaxed appearance.

This Japanese Forest ornamental grass is particularly useful for adding texture to shaded and woodland style planting schemes. Its flowing foliage creates attractive contrast alongside upright plants, broad leaved perennials and architectural shrubs.

Japanese Forest grasses can also be used in contemporary borders, containers and as an edging plant. The naturally cascading form works especially well along paths, raised beds and areas where the foliage can spill gently over an edge.

Pruning Advice

Japanese Forest Grass requires relatively little pruning. Leave the old foliage in place through autumn and winter to provide protection and seasonal structure.

Cut back old foliage in late winter or early spring before fresh growth begins. Use clean, sharp shears and remove any damaged or untidy material to allow the new foliage to develop freely.
