Red Rooster Leatherleaf Sedge Description

Carex buchananii Red Rooster is a distinctive ornamental sedge valued for its narrow foliage and rich reddish bronze colouring. The upright to arching leaves provide fine texture and create a warm, natural appearance within mixed planting schemes.

The strong foliage colour makes Red Rooster particularly useful when you want to introduce contrast into a border. It can be planted alongside green shrubs, flowering perennials and other ornamental grasses to create layers of colour and texture.

Its relatively compact form also makes this Red Rooster ornamental grass suitable for smaller gardens, containers and areas where a more controlled planting habit is preferred.

Pruning Advice

Red Rooster Leatherleaf Sedge is relatively low maintenance. Remove dead, damaged or untidy foliage in late winter or early spring to encourage a fresh appearance.

Avoid cutting the plant back too severely. Instead, remove tired foliage carefully while retaining healthy growth. This helps preserve the natural form of the plant and allows new foliage to develop.

Removing old material from around the base can also help keep the planting area clean and tidy.
