Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna)

Hawthorn Hedge Plants Description

Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) is a hardy, fast-growing native British hedging plant, ideal for creating a dense and naturally secure boundary. Also known as Quickthorn and May Flower, it is a popular choice for traditional hedgerows, gardens and wildlife-friendly planting.

In spring, Hawthorn produces clusters of fragrant white flowers among fresh green foliage, followed by red haws in autumn. Its thorny branches form an effective protective barrier, while the flowers and fruits provide valuable food and shelter for birds, bees, butterflies and other wildlife.

Hawthorn adapts well to normal, clay and chalk soils and can grow in full sun to partial shade. It is also suitable for exposed and coastal locations, making it a reliable choice for many UK gardens.
With a fast growth rate of around 40–60cm per year, it can be maintained at approximately 1–5m to create an attractive and practical hawthorn hedge.

Pruning Advice

For a neat and well-shaped Crataegus monogyna hedge, regular trimming helps maintain its density and desired height. Hawthorn can generally be pruned after flowering in summer and again in autumn.
Always check carefully for nesting birds before cutting and avoid disturbing active nests during the nesting season.

Further Information

Hawthorn is particularly valuable for wildlife and is an excellent choice if you want to establish a natural-looking native boundary. Its tolerance of different soil conditions and exposed sites also makes it a reliable option for many UK gardens.

For the best results, follow the recommended planting density shown for your chosen plant size and root type. As a general guide, bare root plants can be spaced at around 3 - 7 plants per metre, while cell-grown plants can be planted at approximately 4 - 6 plants per metre.

For a fuller Crataegus monogyna hedge, planting in a double staggered row can help create a thicker, more substantial boundary over time.
