Cider Gum Ornamental Tree (Eucalyptus Gunnii 'Cider Gum')

Cider Gum Eucalyptus Tree Description

The Cider Gum (Eucalyptus gunnii), also known as Gunnii Gum or Cider Gum Eucalyptus, is a fast-growing evergreen ornamental tree prized for its attractive blue-grey juvenile foliage, aromatic leaves and distinctive bark. Native to Tasmania, this versatile eucalyptus brings year-round greenery, texture and colour to UK gardens.

A Cider Gum tree is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking an eye-catching specimen tree with a naturally attractive form. Its young, rounded, silvery-blue leaves gradually develop into longer, greener foliage as the tree matures. Mature trees can reach approximately 12–20 metres in height, although their ultimate size depends on growing conditions and management.

The smooth, mottled bark adds further interest, peeling away to reveal fresh layers beneath. During summer, clusters of small, white flowers provide nectar for bees and other pollinators. With its rapid growth, evergreen foliage and distinctive appearance, the Cider Gum eucalyptus tree makes a striking addition to suitable gardens and landscapes.

Pruning Advice

Pruning helps maintain the shape, size and overall health of a Cider Gum eucalyptus tree. The best time for routine pruning is late winter or early spring, before the main flush of new growth begins.

Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches to maintain a healthy framework. If you want to control the tree's height or encourage attractive juvenile foliage, light pruning can be carried out as needed.

Cider Gum responds well to appropriate pruning, but avoid removing too much of the canopy at once.

For smaller gardens, regular formative pruning while the tree is young can help manage its size and encourage a more compact shape.

Always use clean, sharp pruning tools and avoid severe pruning unless you understand the tree's response to the method being used.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is Cider Gum suitable for UK gardens?

Yes, Cider Gum can grow successfully in many UK gardens, provided it has a sunny position and well-drained soil. Consider its substantial mature size before planting, particularly in smaller gardens or near buildings.

2. How tall does a Cider Gum eucalyptus tree grow?

A Cider Gum can reach approximately 12–20 metres at maturity when left unpruned. Its final height depends on growing conditions, available space and pruning practices. Regular management can help keep it smaller.

3. Does Cider Gum eucalyptus keep its leaves in winter?

Yes, Cider Gum is an evergreen tree, so it generally retains its foliage throughout the year. This makes it useful for maintaining greenery and structure during the winter months.

4. Can I grow Cider Gum in a small garden?

Cider Gum can be grown in a smaller garden if its vigorous growth is managed through regular pruning. However, it is naturally a large tree, so you should consider its mature size and allow enough room for its roots and canopy to develop.

5. Why is my Cider Gum tree losing its leaves?

Some leaf loss is normal as eucalyptus trees replace older foliage. However, excessive leaf drop may indicate stress caused by waterlogging, drought, transplant shock or unsuitable growing conditions. Check the soil moisture, drainage and overall condition of the tree to identify potential causes.
