Green Privet Plants Description

Green Privet is a versatile hedging plant valued for its vigorous growth, glossy green foliage and ability to form a dense hedge when regularly trimmed.

As a semi-evergreen or evergreen species, it can retain much of its foliage through winter, particularly in milder conditions.

The oval green leaves provide a consistent backdrop through the growing season, while the small white flowers appear in midsummer in dense clusters.

These are followed by rounded black berries in autumn, adding seasonal interest to established plants.

Ligustrum ovalifolium is adaptable to a variety of soil types, including chalk, clay, loam and sand.

It grows in full sun or partial shade and prefers soil that is well drained or moist but well drained.

Green Privet responds well to regular pruning, making it suitable for maintaining a defined hedge at the height and shape required.

Its vigorous growth can also help establish screening relatively quickly compared with slower-growing hedging plants.

Our Green Privet range includes pot-grown, bare-root, root-ball and instant hedging options.

Planting densities vary according to the plant size and format selected, so check the individual product listing when deciding how many plants you need.

Pruning Advice

Green Privet responds well to regular pruning and can be trimmed to maintain a neat, dense hedge. For formal hedges, pruning two or three times during the growing season can help maintain the desired shape and encourage bushier growth.

Avoid repeatedly cutting into old wood unnecessarily, particularly when a lighter trim is enough to maintain the hedge.

For an informal hedge, less frequent pruning can be used to retain a more natural appearance.

Further Information

Green Privet is available in a range of sizes and formats, including pot-grown, bare-root, root-ball and instant hedging.

The current product range includes pot-grown plants from 60/80cm to 125/150cm, bare-root plants from 40/60cm to 60/80cm, root-ball plants from 100/125cm to 125/150cm, and instant hedging supplied in 1m troughs at 180/200cm.

Planting density depends on the size and format selected. Current product recommendations range from 3 plants per metre for larger pot-grown plants to 5–6 plants per metre for smaller pot-grown and bare-root options.

Root-ball plants are listed at 4–5 plants per metre, while the instant hedging is supplied at 1 trough per metre.

When planting Green Privet, choose a position in full sun or partial shade and provide suitable, well-drained soil. Water newly planted hedging regularly while it establishes, particularly during dry periods.

Plant Safety: Green Privet is harmful if eaten. Take care when handling the plant and keep it away from pets that may chew or ingest plant material.
