Beech Hedging (Fagus sylvatica)

Beech Hedging Plant Description

Beech (Fagus sylvatica) is a popular choice for creating a formal, well-defined hedge. Its smooth grey bark and fresh green leaves give the hedge a clean appearance during spring and summer, while the foliage develops warm golden, copper and russet-brown tones in autumn.

Unlike many deciduous hedging plants, Beech commonly holds onto its old brown leaves through winter. This gives established hedges a distinctive winter appearance while continuing to provide screening and structure after the green foliage has fallen.

New leaves emerge in spring, replacing the older foliage.
Beech can be clipped to create a dense, formal boundary or screening hedge and responds well to regular trimming.

It is suitable for full sun or partial shade and grows well in free-draining soil. However, it does not perform well in excessively wet or very dry conditions, so choosing a suitable planting position is important.

As a native British species, Common Beech is also a natural choice for gardens where a traditional native hedge is preferred.

Pruning Advice

Beech hedges respond well to regular trimming and are best maintained with an annual cut once established. From the third year onwards, trim the sides in late summer, with the second week of August being the recommended time.

This allows the hedge to retain its latest flush of leaves, which turn brown and remain on the hedge through winter.

Young Beech plants may need formative pruning if they have sparse or limited side growth. Shortening the leading shoot and longer side shoots by up to one third can encourage a fuller hedge as it develops.

If the plants already have plenty of side branches, pruning may not be necessary immediately after planting.

When trimming a formal Beech hedge, keep the base slightly wider than the top. This allows more light to reach the lower growth and helps maintain a dense hedge from top to bottom.

If an established hedge has become overgrown, Beech can tolerate renovation pruning while dormant in February.

Where a substantial reduction in height or width is needed, it is better to spread the work over two seasons rather than removing too much growth at once.

When pruning between March and August, always check the hedge for nesting birds first. If an active nest is present, delay trimming until the young birds have fledged.

Further Information

Beech hedging is best planted from mid-autumn to late winter while the plants are dormant, provided the ground is workable and not frozen or waterlogged. Good soil preparation before planting will help the hedge establish successfully.

Allow enough space between plants for the hedge to develop evenly without becoming overcrowded. The recommended planting density for Beech can vary according to the size of plants supplied and the type of hedge you want to create, so follow the planting density shown with each product.

After planting, water the hedge thoroughly and continue to water during dry spells while the plants establish. Keeping the area around the hedge free from competing weeds will also help young plants make good growth.

Beech is particularly well suited to formal hedging and can be maintained at a range of heights. Its ability to retain brown leaves through winter gives established hedges useful seasonal screening, although it will not provide the same year-round green appearance as an evergreen hedge.

FAQs

Is Beech good for hedging?

Yes. Beech (Fagus sylvatica) is well suited to formal hedging and can be clipped to create a dense, well-defined boundary or screening hedge.

Is Beech evergreen?

No. Beech is deciduous, so it loses its leaves each autumn. However, established Beech hedges usually retain their old brown leaves through winter, providing additional screening and structure until the new leaves emerge in spring.

How fast does Beech hedging grow?

The Beech plants on this page are listed with a growth rate of around 30–60cm per year. Actual growth can vary depending on growing conditions, establishment and maintenance.

How tall can a Beech hedge be?

Beech hedges can be maintained at a range of heights depending on the desired use. The plants on this page can be maintained at around 1–5m, while RHS notes that Beech hedges can be grown from around 90cm upwards and taller where screening is required.

When should a Beech hedge be trimmed?

Established Beech hedges should generally be trimmed once a year in late summer, with the RHS recommending the second week of August. If an established hedge becomes overgrown, renovation pruning can be carried out in February while the plants are dormant.
