All Gold Japanese Forest Grass Description

Hakonechloa macra All Gold is a popular ornamental grass valued for its bright golden foliage and elegant, flowing habit. The narrow leaves arch naturally from the centre of the plant, creating gentle movement and a soft texture that works beautifully in informal and contemporary planting schemes.

This variety is part of the Hakonechloa grass group and is particularly useful for introducing lighter colour into shaded parts of the garden. Its golden foliage creates an attractive contrast against darker green shrubs, ferns and other shade tolerant plants.

Hakonechloa macra is commonly known as Japanese Forest Grass and is well suited to UK growing conditions when planted in an appropriate position. All Gold is particularly effective in shaded borders, woodland style planting, containers and along paths where its cascading form can be appreciated.

For gardeners looking for Japanese forest grass UK planting, this variety offers an excellent combination of colour, texture and movement. Its arching foliage provides seasonal interest without overwhelming smaller planting areas.

Pruning Advice

All Gold Japanese Forest Grass requires minimal pruning. Its foliage can be left in place through autumn and winter to provide seasonal structure.

In late winter or early spring, cut back the old foliage close to the base before new growth begins. Remove dead or damaged material carefully to make room for fresh foliage.

Avoid cutting back too early in autumn, as leaving the foliage in place can help protect the plant during colder weather and maintain interest in the garden.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Hakonechloa macra suitable for UK gardens?

Yes. Hakonechloa macra is well suited to many UK gardens when planted in fertile, moisture retentive soil and a suitable partially shaded position. Protecting it from prolonged dryness will help maintain healthy growth.

What colour is All Gold Japanese Forest Grass?

All Gold produces bright golden yellow foliage. The lighter colour makes it particularly useful for adding contrast and visual interest to shaded planting areas.

Does Hakonechloa grass spread quickly?

No. Hakonechloa grass generally forms a gradual, clump forming habit rather than spreading aggressively. Its moderate growth makes it suitable for borders and smaller garden spaces.

Can Japanese Forest Grass grow under trees?

It can perform well beneath suitable trees where there is partial shade and enough moisture in the soil. Avoid areas with severe root competition or extremely dry conditions.

When should Japanese Forest Grass be cut back?

The old foliage is best cut back in late winter or early spring, just before new growth starts. This allows the plant to retain winter structure while making space for fresh foliage.
