Kleine Fontane Miscanthus Description

Miscanthus Kleine Fontane is a graceful variety of Miscanthus sinensis, valued for its narrow foliage, upright habit and attractive flower plumes. It brings height and movement to planting schemes while maintaining a refined appearance.

Also known as Chinese Silver Grass, Miscanthus sinensis is widely used in UK gardens for its architectural form and seasonal interest. Kleine Fontane is particularly effective where gardeners want to introduce a tall ornamental grass without creating an overly heavy display.

This grass Miscanthus sinensis variety can be planted towards the middle or back of borders, where its foliage and flower heads can rise above lower growing plants. It also works well when planted in groups for a stronger visual impact.

For gardeners looking for ornamental grasses UK gardeners can use in a variety of planting styles, Kleine Fontane offers a versatile option. Combine it with flowering perennials, shrubs and other grasses to create contrasting heights and textures.

As one of the tall ornamental grasses, it is particularly useful for adding vertical interest to larger borders, prairie inspired planting schemes and open garden areas.

Pruning Advice

Leave the foliage and flower plumes of Kleine Fontane Miscanthus in place through autumn and winter. The dried stems can provide valuable structure and movement during the colder months.

Cut back the old growth in late winter or early spring before fresh shoots emerge. Wear gloves when pruning and remove the previous season's foliage close to the base without damaging new growth.
