Bird Cherry Hedge Plant Description

Bird Cherry (Prunus padus) is a deciduous native hedge plant with a naturally bushy habit and attractive seasonal features.

Its toothed, oval leaves emerge green before turning yellow in autumn, bringing a noticeable change of colour as the season progresses.

In late spring, Bird Cherry produces pendant clusters of fragrant white flowers. These provide an attractive display and are followed by small, dark fruits later in the year.

The fruit is particularly valuable to wildlife, making Bird Cherry a suitable choice for wildlife-friendly planting and native hedging.

Although Bird Cherry can develop into a large tree when allowed to grow naturally, it can also be incorporated into managed hedging where its growth is regularly controlled.

Its native status and wildlife value make it particularly well suited to informal and mixed hedgerows.

Bird Cherry performs best in full sun and is suitable for a range of soils, including chalk, clay, loam and sand. It prefers soil that is moist but well drained and can tolerate both exposed and sheltered positions.

Pruning Advice

Bird Cherry generally requires only light pruning to maintain its shape and remove unwanted growth. As it is a deciduous tree with a naturally large growth habit, regular formative pruning can be useful when it is being managed as a hedge.

Remove dead, damaged, diseased or crossing branches, along with any shoots that are growing in an unwanted direction. Where a hedge needs to be kept within a particular size, selective pruning can help maintain its shape without removing excessive amounts of growth.

Prunus padus should be pruned with care because cherries can be susceptible to silver leaf disease.

The RHS places Bird Cherry in Pruning Group 1 and recommends mid-summer pruning if silver leaf is a concern. Avoid unnecessary heavy pruning, particularly on established plants.

Before pruning, check the hedge for active bird nests and delay work if necessary. Use clean, sharp pruning tools to make neat cuts and wear suitable protective gloves when handling larger branches.

Further Information

Bird Cherry is a particularly useful choice for a more natural, wildlife-friendly hedge. As a native UK plant, it can contribute to a mixed hedgerow while providing seasonal interest through its fragrant spring flowers, dark fruits and yellow autumn foliage.

The plant is best suited to full sun and prefers moist but well-drained soil. It tolerates a range of soil types, including chalk, clay, loam and sand, and can grow in both exposed and sheltered positions.

Bird Cherry can become a large tree if left to grow naturally, so it is important to consider the available space when using it for hedging.

Regular management will be needed if you want to maintain a particular hedge height or shape.

Newly planted Bird Cherry should be watered regularly while it establishes, particularly during dry periods.

Deciduous hedges are generally planted from mid-autumn to late winter, provided the ground is not waterlogged or frozen.

FAQs

Is Bird Cherry suitable for hedging?

Yes. Bird Cherry can be used for both single-species hedges and mixed native hedgerows. It develops into a substantial plant when left untrimmed, so regular pruning is important if you want to maintain a particular hedge size.

Is Bird Cherry evergreen?

No. Bird Cherry is deciduous, meaning it loses its leaves during winter. Its white spring flowers, dark fruits and yellow autumn foliage provide seasonal interest instead.

How fast does Bird Cherry grow?

Bird Cherry has an average growth rate of approximately 20–40cm per year according to the planting information provided for this collection. Growth can vary depending on soil, light, moisture and growing conditions.

What soil does Bird Cherry need?

Bird Cherry is adaptable to a range of soils, including chalk, clay, loam and sand. It prefers moist but well-drained conditions and should not be planted where the soil remains waterlogged.

Does Bird Cherry need full sun?

Bird Cherry grows well in full sun and can also tolerate partial shade. A brighter position is preferable if you want to encourage good flowering and healthy growth.

When should Bird Cherry be pruned?

Light pruning is best carried out in summer, particularly because pruning cherries at unsuitable times can increase the risk of silver leaf disease. Remove dead, damaged or unwanted branches and avoid unnecessary heavy pruning.
