Wild Cherry Hedge Plants Description

Wild Cherry, or p avium, is a fast growing, deciduous native that works well as a hedge, adding beauty and seasonal interest to the garden.

Known in some references as avium prunus, it produces a striking show of white, fragrant blossom in spring, followed by small red to dark purple cherries in summer, both ornamental and useful for wildlife.

Glossy green foliage turns vivid red and orange in autumn, adding colour as the season changes.

A prunus avium wild cherry hedge suits larger gardens or naturalistic planting, giving good screening alongside real biodiversity value.

Benefits:

Seasonal beauty: Masses of white flowers appear in spring, small cherries follow in summer and draw in birds, and the leaves turn vivid red and orange in autumn for a striking seasonal change.

Wildlife-friendly: Bees and other pollinators feed on the spring blossom, birds and small mammals eat the cherries, and the dense growth offers shelter and nesting spots.

Fast-growing: This wild cherry tree prunus avium is a vigorous grower, making it a good option for building a tall hedge or screen quickly.

Hardy and adaptable: It copes with chalky or clay soil and full sun to partial shade, and stands up well to cold, suiting most UK climates.

Erosion control: A wide-spreading root system helps hold soil in place, useful for slopes or areas prone to erosion.

Pruning Advice

A wild cherry hedge benefits from regular pruning to control its shape and size, since it can grow tall and wide if left unchecked.

Prune in late summer to early autumn, after fruiting, as this helps prevent diseases such as silver leaf.

Remove dead, damaged or diseased branches and trim back excess growth to keep the hedge neat.

An overgrown hedge can be hard pruned in late winter to rejuvenate it, but avoid cutting into old wood, as this can reduce new growth.

With its flowers, fruit and vibrant autumn colour, prunus avium hedge planting adds seasonal interest, screening and real wildlife value to any garden.

Further Information

Our wild cherry hedge plants are available bare root, root ball or pot grown. Spacing is flexible and depends on the look you want.

For bare root plants, 3 per metre is the minimum, 5 per metre is ideal, and 7 per metre in a double staggered row gives a thicker hedge faster.

As a rule, smaller plants go in closer together. Cell-grown plants do best at 4 per metre in a single row, or ideally 6 per metre in a staggered row.
