Barberry Rose Glow Hedge (Berberis thunbergii 'Rose Glow' and Berberis thunbergii Harlequin)

Barberry 'Rose Glow' is a deciduous ornamental shrub valued for its distinctive purple, pink and cream variegated foliage. The related 'Harlequin' cultivar also produces colourful, mottled leaves, giving both forms strong visual appeal when used as a hedge or within mixed planting. Small pale yellow flowers appear in spring, followed by red berries later in the year.

Barberry Rose Glow Hedge Plant Description

Barberry Rose Glow is a deciduous Japanese Barberry valued for its distinctive foliage and compact, bushy growth.

‘Rose Glow’ produces young red-purple leaves marked with irregular pink and white variegation, while the related ‘Harlequin’ has deep purple foliage with creamy-white and grey mottling.

Both cultivars bring strong seasonal colour to garden borders and hedging.

Small, pale yellow flowers appear in spring, followed by berries in autumn. The combination of colourful foliage, seasonal flowers and fruit gives this Barberry hedge interest across much of the growing season.

The spiny stems and dense, bushy habit also make these cultivars suitable for creating a more secure garden boundary. Their compact growth makes them particularly useful where an ornamental hedge is required alongside a defined garden boundary.

For the best results, plant Barberry Rose Glow in full sun or partial shade and use a well-drained soil.

Both cultivars tolerate a range of soil types, including chalk, clay, loam and sand, and flowering and fruiting are generally strongest in a sunny position.

Pruning Advice

Barberry Rose Glow and Harlequin do not require extensive routine pruning, but trimming can be used to control their size and maintain a compact, well-shaped hedge.

As deciduous Berberis, they can be pruned in mid to late winter while dormant. For established hedges, light trimming after flowering can also help maintain a neat appearance.

If you are growing these plants specifically as a hedge, they can be clipped in summer to maintain their shape.

However, summer trimming can reduce the number of berries produced later in the year, so lighter pruning is preferable if you want to retain their autumn fruit.

Older plants can be rejuvenated by removing some of the oldest stems at ground level in late winter.

Berberis thunbergii 'Rose Glow' can also tolerate harder pruning when necessary, although heavy pruning will reduce flowering and fruiting in the following growing season.

As both cultivars have spiny stems, wear thorn-proof gloves and suitable protective clothing when pruning.

Secateurs are useful for removing individual older or unwanted branches and allow more selective pruning than hedge trimmers.
