Osmanthus burkwoodii Hedge (Osmanthus x burkwoodii)

Osmanthus x burkwoodii Hedge Plants Description

Osmanthus x burkwoodii is an elegant evergreen hedge plant valued for its dense, glossy dark green foliage and fragrant white flowers. Small tubular flowers appear in spring, producing a sweet scent that adds seasonal interest to the garden.

With its compact, bushy habit, Osmanthus burkwoodii is suitable for garden boundaries, screening and both formal and informal hedges.

This versatile hedge plant can grow in full sun or partial shade and is suitable for a range of well drained soil types. Its evergreen foliage provides colour and structure throughout the year, while its relatively slow growth makes it easier to maintain than many faster growing hedging plants.

Benefits

Fragrant flowers: Osmanthus burkwoodii produces clusters of small white flowers in spring, filling the surrounding area with a pleasant sweet fragrance.

Year-round interest: As an evergreen hedge plant, it retains its foliage throughout the year, providing consistent colour, structure and garden screening.

Suitable for partial shade: Osmanthus x burkwoodii can grow successfully in partial shade, making it a useful option for gardens where some areas receive limited direct sunlight.

Dense growth: Its compact and naturally bushy habit helps create an attractive hedge for defining boundaries, dividing garden areas or providing privacy.

Hardy and versatile: Osmanthus burkwoodii is adaptable to a variety of well drained soil types and can be used in a range of garden settings, including urban environments.

Low maintenance: Its slow growth rate means it generally requires less frequent trimming, making it a practical choice for gardeners looking for manageable evergreen hedging.

Growth Rate
Osmanthus x burkwoodii has a slow growth rate of approximately 20-30cm per year. It gradually develops into a dense and compact hedge, making it suitable for garden boundaries and areas where controlled growth is preferred.

Although Osmanthus burkwoodii takes longer to reach its mature height than fast growing hedge plants, its evergreen foliage provides useful structure while the hedge establishes.

Good soil preparation, regular watering during establishment and suitable growing conditions will help young plants develop successfully.

Pruning Advice

Prune Osmanthus x burkwoodii lightly in late spring or early summer, ideally after flowering. Regular light trimming helps maintain a neat shape and encourages a bushier appearance.
Avoid heavy pruning where possible, as excessive cutting can remove flowering growth and reduce the number of flowers produced in the following season. Due to its slow growth rate, Osmanthus burkwoodii generally needs only occasional maintenance once established.

Further Information

Osmanthus burkwoodii is a versatile evergreen hedge plant that combines year-round foliage with fragrant spring flowers. It can be planted in full sun or partial shade and is suitable for well drained chalk, clay, sand and loam soils.

Planting distances depend on the size of the plants and the density of hedge required. For bare root plants, spacing at 3 plants per metre is sufficient, while 5 plants per metre is optimal for a fuller hedge.

A double staggered row of 7 plants per metre can create a denser hedge more quickly.
Water newly planted Osmanthus x burkwoodii regularly during the establishment period, particularly during dry weather. Keeping the area around the plants free from weeds will also help reduce competition for moisture and nutrients.
