Japanese Holly Hedge Plants Description

Japanese Holly Hedge Plants (Ilex crenata) are evergreen shrubs with small, glossy dark green leaves and a naturally dense growth habit.

Unlike Common Holly, the foliage has no sharp spines, giving the plant a softer appearance that works well in neatly maintained hedges.

Small white flowers appear in summer, followed by shiny black berries. These berries should not be eaten. The compact foliage makes Japanese Holly suitable for low hedges, borders and formal garden planting where a fine-leaved, structured appearance is required.

Japanese Holly grows best in full sun or partial shade and prefers moist but well-drained soil. It performs particularly well in slightly acidic to neutral conditions, while waterlogged or excessively dry soils should be avoided.

With its slow growth rate and tolerance of regular trimming, Japanese Holly Hedge can be maintained at a neat, manageable height and shaped to suit the planting area.

Pruning Advice

Japanese Holly is slow growing and responds well to regular light pruning, making it suitable for maintaining a neat, formal hedge.
For established hedges, carry out the main pruning in early spring to maintain the desired height, width and shape. Remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches at the same time.

Young Japanese Holly plants should be allowed to establish before regular shaping begins. Once established, trim new growth as required to maintain an even outline, taking care not to remove more growth than necessary.

Avoid severe pruning, particularly when the plants are under stress from very dry or waterlogged conditions.

Further Information

Japanese Holly Hedge plants are available as root-ball and pot-grown plants in a range of sizes. Planting density depends on the size and format of the plants selected.

For the current range, we recommend 5 plants per metre for 20/40cm pot-grown plants, 4–5 plants per metre for 40/60cm pot-grown plants, 3–4 plants per metre for 60/80cm root-ball plants, and 3 plants per metre for 80/100cm root-ball plants.

Japanese Holly prefers moist but well-drained soil, particularly in slightly acidic to neutral conditions. Water newly planted hedges thoroughly and keep them well watered while they establish, especially during dry periods.

Once established, regular light pruning can be used to maintain the hedge at the desired height and shape. Its small, non-spiny leaves give the hedge a neat appearance that works particularly well in formal planting schemes.
