Rosa rugosa Rubra Rose Hedging Description

Rosa rugosa Rubra is a tough, deciduous rose admired for its rich pink blooms, with a hint of purple-red, and its deeply textured, crinkled leaves.

Whether you know it as rose rugosa Rubra or Pink Ramanus Rose, it produces large, scented flowers from late spring to early autumn, followed by bright red-orange hips as the season turns.

Those hips draw in birds and other wildlife, adding colour when little else is in bloom.

Attractive and practical, a Rosa rugosa Rubra hedge suits informal boundaries in gardens of almost any style, from flowering borders and wildlife corners to hardy screens in tricky spots.

Benefits:

Fragrant flowers: The semi-double, deep pink blooms of this rugosa Rubra rose open in generous flushes all summer, giving off a sweet scent and a bold splash of colour along any border or boundary.

Tough and easy to grow: Very hardy and forgiving, Rosa rugosa Rubra establishes in poor soil and stands up to wind, salt spray and dry spells, so it copes where many other hedging plants struggle.

Great for wildlife: Bees and butterflies visit the summer flowers, birds feed on the autumn hips, and the dense, prickly branches give small creatures safe cover.

Natural security barrier: Thorny stems packed closely together create a hedge that deters intruders and animals while also adding privacy.

Interest through the year: Glossy, deeply veined leaves add texture from spring onwards, followed by vivid hips that keep the hedge looking lively into winter.

Pruning Advice

Rosa rugosa Rubra needs little attention, though a yearly prune keeps growth healthy and flowering strong. Aim for late winter or early spring, just before new shoots appear. Start by cutting out anything dead, damaged or diseased, then thin a few stems so air can move freely through the plant. An overgrown hedge can be cut back harder, but try not to cut deep into old wood, as this can lead to fewer flowers. Once the blooms fade, a light deadhead encourages more flowers and keeps the shape neat.
With just a little care, your Pink Ramanus Rose will reward you with months of flowers, colourful hips and solid structure through the year, while feeding and sheltering local wildlife.

Further Information

Our Rosa rugosa Rubra hedge plants are available bare root or pot grown. Spacing is flexible and depends on the look you want. For bare root plants, 3 per metre is the minimum, 5 per metre is ideal, and 7 per metre in a double staggered row gives a thicker hedge faster. As a rule, smaller plants go in closer together. Cell-grown plants do best at 4 per metre in a single row, or ideally 6 per metre in a staggered row.
