Chinese Silver Grass Description

Miscanthus sinensis, commonly known as Chinese Silver Grass or Maiden Grass, is one of the most popular ornamental grasses for creating height and movement in UK gardens. Its long, narrow leaves form attractive clumps, while airy flower plumes emerge during the flowering season.

The foliage can create a strong vertical presence without appearing too heavy, making Miscanthus grass suitable for mixed borders, prairie inspired planting and contemporary gardens. Its flower heads can also remain attractive after flowering, providing useful winter structure.

There are many cultivated forms of Miscanthus sinensis, with differences in foliage colour, height and flower appearance. Some varieties, including Miscanthus sinensis Morning Light, are valued for their attractive variegated foliage and refined form.

For gardeners looking for ornamental grasses UK planting, Chinese Silver Grass offers excellent versatility. It can be used as a feature plant, planted in groups for screening or incorporated into mixed borders alongside perennials and shrubs.

Pruning Advice

Chinese Silver Grass can be left standing through autumn and winter, when its dried foliage and flower plumes provide valuable seasonal structure and movement.

In late winter or early spring, cut the old foliage back close to the base before new growth begins. Wear suitable gardening gloves when cutting back mature clumps, as the foliage can have sharp edges.

Clear away old stems and foliage to allow fresh growth to emerge freely during spring.
