Ferner Osten Miscanthus Description

Miscanthus sinensis Ferner Osten is a graceful ornamental grass valued for its upright growth, fine foliage and attractive flower plumes. It is an excellent option for gardeners looking to add height and movement without relying solely on flowering plants.

This grass Miscanthus sinensis variety develops narrow, arching leaves that create a soft texture within planting schemes. Its flower plumes provide additional seasonal interest and can remain attractive after flowering, helping the plant contribute to the garden into autumn and winter.

As a versatile Miscanthus plant, Ferner Osten works particularly well towards the middle or back of borders. It can be planted individually as a feature or grouped together to create a stronger display.

For gardeners searching for grasses for garden borders, this variety can be combined with flowering perennials, evergreen shrubs and other ornamental grasses. The contrast between its fine foliage and broader leaved plants helps create depth and visual interest.

Pruning Advice

Leave the foliage and flower plumes of Ferner Osten Miscanthus in place through autumn and winter. The dried stems can provide useful structure and movement during the colder months.

Cut back the previous season's growth in late winter or early spring before fresh shoots appear. Wear gloves when pruning and remove old foliage close to the base without damaging new growth.
