Gorse Plants Description

Gorse Hedge Plants (Ulex europaeus) are dense evergreen shrubs with rigid, spiny green shoots that provide year-round structure and make them well suited to boundary hedging.

Its distinctive yellow flowers appear from late winter through spring, with flowering often continuing into summer. The flowers have a characteristic coconut-like fragrance, particularly noticeable on warm days.

Gorse produces small brown seed pods after flowering and can form dense thickets as it matures. Its flowers are attractive to bees and other pollinating insects, while the dense structure provides useful cover for wildlife.

Gorse is particularly well suited to sunny, exposed sites and can tolerate poor, dry and sandy soils once established. It is also well adapted to coastal conditions, making it a useful option where other hedge plants may struggle.

Pruning Advice

Gorse generally requires only light pruning to maintain its shape and control its size. For established hedges, prune after flowering, removing unwanted or overgrown shoots to maintain the desired height and outline.

Avoid cutting deeply into old, woody stems, as Gorse does not respond well to severe pruning into older wood. Instead, remove selected branches where necessary and shape the newer growth gradually.

Young Gorse plants should be allowed to establish before regular pruning begins. Remove any dead or damaged growth as required, and avoid excessive trimming that could reduce the plant's natural flowering display.

When pruning Gorse, wear suitable gloves and protective clothing because its spiny shoots can cause injury.

Further Information

Gorse Hedge plants are currently available as 2L pot-grown plants at 20/40cm, with a recommended planting density of 5 plants per metre.

Gorse is particularly well suited to poor, well-drained soils and sunny, exposed positions. It can tolerate dry conditions once established and is well adapted to coastal sites. Avoid planting in heavy, waterlogged soil or areas with prolonged shade.

Water newly planted Gorse regularly while it establishes, particularly during dry periods. Once established, it is relatively drought tolerant and requires little routine maintenance beyond occasional pruning to control its size and shape.
