Ice Dance Japanese Sedge Description

Carex morrowii Ice Dance is a popular form of Japanese Sedge recognised for its narrow green leaves edged with attractive creamy white margins. The foliage creates a bright, fresh appearance while the gently arching habit adds movement and softness to planting schemes.

The contrasting foliage makes Ice Dance particularly useful for brightening darker areas of the garden. It can be planted beneath trees, alongside shrubs or towards the front of borders where its variegated leaves can be appreciated.

Its relatively compact growth also makes Ice Dance Japanese Sedge suitable for containers, shaded patios and mixed planting schemes.

Pruning Advice

Ice Dance Japanese Sedge is relatively low maintenance. Remove dead, damaged or untidy leaves in late winter or early spring to maintain a neat appearance.

Avoid cutting healthy foliage back too heavily, as this can reduce the plant's attractive form. Instead, carefully remove older or damaged leaves while allowing fresh growth to develop.

Clear away dead material around the base when required as part of seasonal garden maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Carex morrowii Ice Dance?

Carex morrowii Ice Dance is a cultivated form of Japanese Sedge with green foliage edged in creamy white. It is valued for its attractive variegation, compact habit and ability to add texture to planting schemes.

Is Ice Dance Japanese Sedge evergreen?

It can provide attractive foliage throughout much of the year, although foliage quality can vary with seasonal conditions. Removing damaged or tired leaves helps keep the plant looking fresh.

Can Ice Dance grow under trees?

Yes. Ice Dance Japanese Sedge is well suited to partially shaded areas and can work effectively beneath trees and alongside shrubs, provided the soil has suitable moisture and drainage.

Does Ice Dance Japanese Sedge spread quickly?

It forms a relatively controlled clump rather than rapidly spreading across a planting area. This makes it useful for adding texture and structure without becoming difficult to manage.

Can Ice Dance Japanese Sedge be used as ground cover?

Yes. When planted in groups, its dense, arching foliage can help create a cohesive low planting layer. It works particularly well beneath taller shrubs and trees or towards the front of mixed borders.
