Euonymus japonicus Jean Hugues Hedge Plants Description

Euonymus japonicus Jean Hugues is a dense, compact evergreen that works particularly well as a low-growing hedge.

Its dark green foliage stays attractive throughout the year, helping to maintain definition and structure in formal gardens, borders and parterres.
This Euonymus japonicus hedge is also considered a useful alternative to traditional Box hedging.

Unlike Buxus, which can be affected by box blight, Jean Hugues is resistant to box blight, offering an alternative for gardeners looking for a reliable evergreen option.

With its naturally tidy appearance and manageable height of up to 1m, Euonymus Jean Hugues can be used to define pathways, separate planting areas or create neat formal boundaries.

It is suitable for a range of garden conditions, including coastal locations, and its evergreen foliage provides interest through the winter months.

Pruning Advice

Euonymus Jean Hugues is relatively easy to maintain and responds well to light trimming. Tip trim in May to encourage a neat, compact shape, then tidy the hedge again in September if required.

Avoid excessive pruning when establishing a young hedge and allow the plants time to develop their desired shape.

Regular light trimming is generally preferable to heavy cutting.

Further Information

The recommended planting density for Euonymus japonicus Jean Hugues hedge plants varies according to the plant size and root type selected. The product grid provides recommended quantities for each option and should be used as a guide when planning your hedge.

As a general guide, bare root plants can be planted at approximately 3-7 plants per metre, while cell-grown plants are generally planted at 4-6 plants per metre. Closer planting may help create a fuller hedge sooner, although this can increase the number of plants required.

For larger quantities, a double staggered row or zig-zag planting pattern may be suitable. Consider the eventual height and width of the hedge, available space and how quickly you want the planting to become established when choosing your spacing.
