Planting Conditions Mexican Feather Grass grows best in full sun and well drained soil. It is particularly suitable for gravel gardens, sunny borders and open planting areas where water does not collect around the roots. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soil, especially during winter. Once established, the plant can tolerate some dry conditions, making it useful for lower maintenance planting schemes.
Growth Rate Stipa tenuissima forms fine, dense clumps of slender foliage that create a soft, flowing effect. Its light appearance contrasts beautifully with plants that have broader leaves or stronger architectural shapes. The grass can spread by seed in suitable conditions, so remove unwanted seedlings if you want to keep the planting area controlled.

Pruning Advice

Tidy Mexican Feather Grass by removing dead or damaged foliage as needed. In spring, gently comb through the clump with gloved hands to remove loose, old leaves.

Avoid cutting deeply into the crown, as this can damage the plant. Remove unwanted seedlings when necessary to prevent the grass from spreading beyond its intended area.
