Brachyglottis Hedge Plant Description

Brachyglottis 'Sunshine' is a bushy evergreen shrub with attractive dark green foliage and a silvery-white, felted underside. The foliage provides structure throughout the year, making this Brachyglottis hedge a useful choice for decorative boundaries and informal planting.

In summer, the plant produces bright yellow daisy-like flowers held in loose clusters above the foliage. These cheerful blooms create a strong contrast with the darker leaves and add seasonal interest to the hedge.

Brachyglottis 'Sunshine' is particularly well suited to coastal gardens and exposed positions, provided it is planted in well-drained soil.

It can tolerate a range of soil types, including chalk, clay, loam and sand, and performs best in full sun or partial shade.

Its evergreen foliage, flowering display and relatively compact habit make Brachyglottis hedge plants a practical option where year-round structure and ornamental interest are both required.

Pruning Advice

Brachyglottis 'Sunshine' generally needs only light pruning to maintain its shape and keep the hedge looking tidy. Remove any dead, damaged or unwanted growth, along with branches that have become too long or are affecting the overall shape of the plant.

For a more formal Brachyglottis hedge, trim lightly after flowering to maintain an even outline.

Avoid excessive cutting back, as the plant naturally forms a bushy shape and does not require hard pruning to remain attractive.

If the plant becomes overgrown, remove selected older or unwanted branches rather than cutting the whole shrub back heavily.

This allows you to control the size while retaining its evergreen structure.

Wear suitable gardening gloves when pruning and use clean, sharp secateurs to make neat cuts.

Further Information

Brachyglottis 'Sunshine' is a useful choice for an evergreen hedge where year-round foliage and seasonal flowers are both desirable. Its dark green leaves, white-felted undersides and bright yellow flowers give the plant a distinctive appearance, making it suitable for decorative boundaries and informal garden planting.

This Brachyglottis performs best in full sun and well-drained soil. It can tolerate a range of soil types, including chalk, clay, loam and sand, and is suitable for both coastal and exposed locations. A sheltered position can help provide the best growing conditions.

The evergreen foliage provides structure throughout the year, while the yellow flowers add seasonal interest during the warmer months. Brachyglottis 'Sunshine' can also be used in flower borders, cottage gardens, gravel gardens and wildlife-friendly planting.

Newly planted Brachyglottis should be watered regularly during dry periods while it establishes. Once established, it generally requires little routine care apart from occasional pruning to maintain its shape and remove unwanted growth.
