Golden Leylandii Hedge (Cupressocyparis Leylandii 'Castlewellan Gold')

Description of Castlewellan Gold

Castlewellan Gold is a popular Leylandii variety distinguished by its vibrant foliage and vigorous growth.

Its dense evergreen structure makes it particularly useful when establishing a substantial hedge for privacy, screening or garden division.

The foliage is typically brighter golden-yellow during the growing season and can develop deeper golden or bronze tones during colder months. This seasonal variation gives the hedge additional character while maintaining evergreen coverage
.
When grown in suitable conditions, Castlewellan Gold can establish quickly. Although it has the potential to become a tall tree if left unmanaged, regular trimming makes it possible to control the height and maintain a neat, formal hedge.

Growing and Maintenance Advice

Choose a well-drained planting position with plenty of room for the plants to develop. Golden Leylandii performs particularly well in full sun, although it can tolerate partial shade and a range of soil conditions.

Water newly planted specimens regularly while they establish, particularly during periods of dry weather.

Providing adequate moisture and nutrients can encourage healthy, consistent growth.

Pruning Advice for Golden Leylandii

Regular pruning is important for maintaining a dense and manageable golden hedge. For established plants, trimming twice a year, generally in late spring and late summer, can help control height and encourage a compact appearance.

Trim the fresh growth lightly using sharp shears and avoid cutting back into old, bare wood.

Leylandii does not reliably regenerate from older wood, so consistent pruning from an early stage is preferable to allowing the hedge to become excessively large.

Further Information

Plant spacing depends on the size of the plants and the desired speed of hedge establishment.

For bare-root plants, approximately 3 plants per metre can provide a suitable planting density, while 5 plants per metre can help create a fuller hedge more quickly. For particularly dense coverage, around 7 plants per metre in a double-staggered row can be considered.

For cell-grown plants, approximately 4 plants per metre in a single row or 6 plants per metre in a staggered row can provide good coverage.

Smaller plants can generally be planted at a higher density to help the hedge fill out effectively. When choosing spacing, consider the plant size, available space and how quickly you want the hedge to become established.

Create a Colourful Evergreen Hedge

Golden Leylandii combines fast growth, dense evergreen coverage and distinctive golden foliage, making it a versatile option for gardens that need privacy, screening or a defined boundary. With appropriate planting, watering and regular pruning, Castlewellan Gold can develop into a healthy and attractive hedge.
