Orange Dogwood Hedge (Cornus sanguinea)

Orange Dogwood (Cornus sanguinea) is a native deciduous hedge plant that brings strong seasonal colour to the garden, particularly during autumn and winter. Its green foliage develops rich red tones before falling to reveal the plant's distinctive coloured stems, creating a striking display when many other hedges have lost their leaves.
Its upright, bushy growth makes it a versatile choice for informal hedging, wildlife-friendly planting and garden boundaries. White summer flowers and dark berries provide additional seasonal interest, while the colourful stems make Orange Dogwood especially appealing if winter structure and colour are important to your planting scheme.

Orange Dogwood Hedge Plant Description

Orange Dogwood (Cornus sanguinea) is a deciduous native shrub that brings a changing display to the garden throughout the year. Its fresh green foliage provides structure during spring and summer before developing attractive red tones in autumn and falling to reveal the coloured stems beneath.

Small clusters of white flowers appear during summer, followed by dark berries later in the season. These seasonal features add interest to the hedge and make Orange Dogwood a useful choice for wildlife-friendly planting.

The plant is particularly valued for its stems, which become much more noticeable once the leaves have fallen. Younger growth provides the strongest winter colour, giving the hedge added interest when many other deciduous plants are otherwise bare.

With its naturally bushy habit, Orange Dogwood works well as an informal hedge, screen or boundary planting. It is also a good option for native planting schemes where seasonal colour and wildlife value are important.

For the best results, plant Orange Dogwood in full sun or partial shade. It grows in a range of soil types and prefers soil that remains moist but well drained.

A sunny position can help produce stronger stem colour, particularly when the plant is being grown for its winter display.

Pruning Advice

Orange Dogwood is best pruned with its winter stem colour in mind. The younger stems generally provide the strongest colour, so regular hard pruning encourages fresh growth and helps keep the hedge compact.

For established plants, prune in late winter to mid-spring, before or as new growth begins. Established stems can be cut back hard to around 5–7.5cm above ground level to encourage a flush of new shoots for the following winter.

Newly planted Dogwood should be allowed to establish for around two years before hard pruning. Once established and growing strongly, this can be repeated annually or every few years depending on how much stem colour and hedge height you want to maintain.

If you want to retain the summer flowers, avoid hard pruning the whole plant in spring, as this will remove the current season's flowering growth. Instead, selected older stems can be removed at the base to encourage younger growth while retaining some of the existing structure.

After pruning, remove any dead or damaged wood and apply a layer of mulch around the base, keeping it clear of the stems. Water during prolonged dry periods to support strong new growth.

Further Information

Orange Dogwood is a good choice for informal hedging where seasonal interest is as important as the hedge itself. Its green foliage turns red in autumn before revealing the coloured stems, which provide added interest through winter.

As a native UK shrub, Cornus sanguinea is also well suited to wildlife-friendly planting. Its summer flowers and dark berries provide additional seasonal interest, while its use in native planting schemes makes it a useful addition to mixed hedgerows and garden boundaries.

For the strongest stem colour, plant Orange Dogwood in full sun. It will tolerate partial shade and a range of soils, but it performs best where the soil remains reasonably moist while still draining well. Avoid allowing newly planted specimens to dry out during their establishment period.

Orange Dogwood can be allowed to develop naturally as an informal hedge or pruned regularly to encourage fresh, colourful stems. If winter stem colour is the main priority, hard pruning in late winter to mid-spring will encourage vigorous new growth for the following season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Orange Dogwood suitable for hedging?

Yes. Orange Dogwood has an upright, bushy habit that makes it suitable for informal hedges and screens. It is particularly useful where seasonal colour and wildlife value are important.

Is Orange Dogwood evergreen?

No. Cornus sanguinea is deciduous, so it loses its leaves in autumn. The foliage develops deep red colour before falling, revealing the coloured stems for winter interest.

How tall does Orange Dogwood grow?

Orange Dogwood has a mature height of approximately 1.5–2.5m. Regular pruning can be used to maintain it at a lower height as a hedge.

How fast does Orange Dogwood grow?

Orange Dogwood has an average growth rate of approximately 20–40cm per year. Its growth can be controlled through regular pruning.

When should Orange Dogwood be pruned?

Established Orange Dogwood is best pruned in late winter to early spring. Removing some of the older stems encourages fresh young growth, which develops the strongest colour for the following winter. If you want to retain the flowers, avoid hard pruning the whole plant in spring.
