Leatherleaf Sedge Description

Carex buchananii is a distinctive ornamental sedge with narrow, finely textured foliage that develops attractive copper, bronze and brown tones.

Its graceful leaves create movement and texture, while its relatively compact form makes it useful for both larger landscapes and smaller gardens.

As one of the more unusual ornamental grasses, Leatherleaf Sedge can be used to introduce warm colour and contrast into planting schemes.

It is particularly effective in contemporary borders, gravel gardens and naturalistic planting designs where foliage texture is an important part of the overall appearance.

The plant can also be used in containers, making it a practical option for patios, terraces and other areas where ground planting is limited.

Pruning Advice

Leatherleaf Sedge generally requires minimal pruning. Remove damaged, dead or untidy foliage in late winter or early spring before new growth becomes established.

Avoid cutting the plant back too aggressively. Removing only tired or damaged foliage helps maintain its natural shape while allowing fresh growth to develop.

Regularly removing dead material from around the base can also help keep the plant looking tidy and reduce the build up of old foliage.
