Eulalia Yakushima Dwarf Ornamental Grass Description

Eulalia Yakushima Dwarf is a compact, clump-forming variety of ornamental grass valued for its graceful foliage and delicate, airy flower plumes. Its slender green leaves form a dense, rounded mound, bringing texture, movement and a soft, flowing appearance to garden planting schemes.

From late summer into autumn, feathery flower plumes emerge above the foliage. These initially appear silvery-pink before gradually maturing to soft tan, adding seasonal colour and structure to the garden. The dried plumes can also provide winter interest if left in place until the following spring.

Growing to approximately 60–90 cm (2–3 feet) in height, Eulalia Yakushima Dwarf is particularly well suited to smaller gardens, containers, borders and areas where space is limited.

Its compact habit combines ornamental appeal with relatively low maintenance, making it a practical choice for gardeners looking to add structure and movement without introducing an oversized grass. It works particularly well along paths, in pots and towards the front or middle of mixed planting borders.

Pruning Advice

When to Prune

Prune Eulalia Yakushima Dwarf in late winter or early spring, just before new growth begins. Leaving the dried foliage and flower plumes over winter provides additional seasonal interest and helps protect the plant before it is cut back.

How to Prune

Using sharp secateurs or garden shears, cut the previous season's growth back to approximately 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) above ground level. Remove any dead or damaged material while taking care not to disturb the crown of the plant.

Additional Care Tips

Division: If the plant becomes overcrowded or you wish to propagate it, divide the clump in early spring before new growth emerges.

Mulching: Apply a light layer of mulch around the base in early spring to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Avoid covering the crown.

Winter Protection: Eulalia Yakushima Dwarf is generally hardy, but a light layer of mulch around the roots can provide additional protection during particularly harsh winters.

Further Information

Compact Size

The dwarf growth habit makes this ornamental grass ideal for smaller gardens, containers and the front of borders. It provides vertical interest and texture without overwhelming surrounding plants.

Year-Round Interest

Eulalia Yakushima Dwarf provides interest across several seasons, with fresh green foliage during spring and summer followed by soft, decorative flower plumes in late summer and autumn. The dried plumes can remain attractive through winter.

Low Maintenance

Once established, this is a relatively low-maintenance ornamental grass. Annual pruning is generally all that is required to maintain its tidy appearance and encourage fresh new growth.

Versatile Planting

This versatile grass suits a variety of garden styles, including modern, naturalistic and wildlife-friendly planting schemes. Its graceful form pairs well with perennials, shrubs and other ornamental grasses.

Wildlife Friendly

The airy flower plumes and dense foliage can provide useful shelter and habitat for insects and small garden wildlife, making it a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly planting areas.

Why Choose Eulalia Yakushima Dwarf?

With its compact size, graceful foliage and seasonal flower plumes, Eulalia Yakushima Dwarf is a versatile ornamental grass for gardeners looking to add structure, texture and movement to their outdoor space. Its manageable size makes it particularly useful where planting space is limited, while its relatively low-maintenance nature makes it easy to incorporate into a range of garden designs.
