Greater Woodrush Description

Luzula sylvatica, commonly known as Greater Woodrush, is a robust evergreen perennial valued for its attractive foliage and ability to thrive in shaded garden conditions. Its broad, grass like leaves form dense clumps that provide useful structure throughout the seasons.

Unlike many ornamental grasses that prefer full sun, Greater Woodrush is particularly effective in woodland style and partially shaded planting. Its deep green foliage creates a natural backdrop for flowering perennials and brighter foliage plants.

This greater woodrush plant is useful for filling larger planting areas, underplanting trees and shrubs, and creating natural looking ground cover. It can also be incorporated into informal borders where its relaxed appearance complements other shade tolerant plants.

For gardeners looking for evergreen grasses, Greater Woodrush offers dependable foliage and year round texture. Its ability to cope with lower light makes it a practical option for areas where traditional sun loving ornamental grasses may not perform as well.

Pruning Advice

Greater Woodrush requires minimal pruning. Remove dead, damaged or untidy leaves as required throughout the year to maintain a neat appearance.

In late winter or early spring, older foliage can be trimmed back if necessary before fresh growth develops. Avoid cutting too deeply into the centre of the plant, as this may damage emerging shoots.

Regularly clearing away damaged foliage can help maintain the attractive evergreen appearance of the clump.
