Wall-Hugging Cotoneaster Plant Description

Wall-Hugging Cotoneaster is a low-growing deciduous shrub with distinctive horizontal branches arranged in a herringbone pattern. This unusual structure makes it particularly attractive when trained against a wall or fence, where the stems can be guided upwards to create layered coverage.

The small, glossy green leaves appear along the branches during the growing season before developing orange and red tones in autumn.

In late spring, the plant produces small white flowers with a pink tinge, followed by red berries later in the year. These seasonal features give the plant interest beyond its distinctive branch structure.

Unlike a conventional upright hedge plant, Wall-Hugging Cotoneaster naturally spreads outwards. With suitable support and initial training, its branches can be directed across a wall, fence, trellis or wire framework.

For the best flowering and fruiting, plant Wall-Hugging Cotoneaster in full sun and use well-drained soil. It can tolerate a range of soil types, including chalk, clay, loam and sand.

Light shade can be tolerated, although a sunny position will encourage better flowering and berry production. Very wet ground should be avoided.

Pruning Advice

Wall-Hugging Cotoneaster generally requires little pruning, but occasional trimming can help control its spread and maintain the shape of a plant trained against a wall or fence.

When training the plant, tie suitable new shoots into wires or trellis as they develop, guiding them into the areas where you want coverage.

Remove shoots that grow too far outwards or back towards the wall, while retaining the main horizontal framework that creates the plant's distinctive herringbone pattern.

For established plants, prune in spring or after flowering to remove overlong or unwanted growth and maintain the desired shape.
A light summer trim can also be used to control new growth on wall-trained plants. Avoid heavy pruning where possible, as this can reduce flowering and berry production in the following season.

Remove any dead, damaged or congested branches as required. Before pruning an established plant, check carefully for active bird nests and delay cutting if necessary.

Further Information

Wall-Hugging Cotoneaster is particularly useful where you want to soften the appearance of a wall or fence with a plant that has an attractive, structured growth habit.

Rather than forming a tall upright hedge, Cotoneaster horizontalis naturally spreads outwards, with its branches developing in the distinctive herringbone pattern for which the plant is known.

When growing it against a wall or fence, provide suitable wires, trellis or another support to help guide the stems.

Planting with enough space between the root ball and the wall will also help rainfall reach the roots properly.

Once established, new shoots can be tied into the support to gradually build up coverage.

Wall-Hugging Cotoneaster is deciduous, with green foliage during the growing season that develops orange and red tones in autumn. Its late-spring flowers and subsequent red berries provide additional seasonal interest.

Full sun is preferable if you want to encourage the best display of flowers and berries, although some light shade can be tolerated.
The plant is adaptable to a range of well-drained soils, including chalk, clay, loam and sand.

Newly planted specimens should be watered thoroughly and kept watered during dry periods while they establish. Once established, Cotoneaster horizontalis is generally relatively straightforward to maintain.

Important: The RHS lists Cotoneaster horizontalis as an invasive non-native species in Great Britain. It is listed on Schedule 9 of the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981.

Although it is not banned from sale, it is an offence to plant it or cause it to grow in the wild in Great Britain.

This should be considered particularly carefully when planting near open countryside or ecologically sensitive areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Wall-Hugging Cotoneaster suitable for growing against a wall or fence?

Yes. Wall-Hugging Cotoneaster is one of the most widely used cotoneasters for training against walls and fences. Its horizontal branches naturally form a distinctive herringbone pattern and can be supported with wires or trellis as they develop.

Is Wall-Hugging Cotoneaster evergreen?

No. Wall-Hugging Cotoneaster is deciduous, so it loses its leaves in autumn. The foliage develops attractive orange and red colours before falling, while the bare herringbone-patterned branches remain an attractive feature during winter.

How tall does Wall-Hugging Cotoneaster grow?

Naturally, Cotoneaster horizontalis is a low-growing shrub that reaches around 0.5–1m in height, with a spread of approximately 1–1.5m. When trained vertically against a wall or fence, it can provide coverage at a greater height.

How fast does Wall-Hugging Cotoneaster grow?

Wall-Hugging Cotoneaster has an average growth rate of approximately 20–40cm per year. Its spreading habit means that allowing enough room for the branches to develop is important when planning your planting.

When does Wall-Hugging Cotoneaster flower?

Small white flowers with a pink tinge appear in late spring. These are followed by red berries, which develop later in the year and provide additional seasonal interest.

Does Wall-Hugging Cotoneaster produce berries?

Yes. The plant produces red berries after flowering, usually towards autumn. The berries are ornamental and should not be eaten.

Where should Wall-Hugging Cotoneaster be planted?

It performs best in full sun and well-drained soil. It can grow in chalk, clay, loam and sandy soils and can tolerate exposed positions. Light shade can also be tolerated, although flowering and fruiting are generally better in sunnier conditions. Very wet soil should be avoided.

How do you train Wall-Hugging Cotoneaster against a wall?

Wall-Hugging Cotoneaster is not a true climber, so its stems need to be supported as they grow. Wires or trellis can be used to guide the shoots, with new growth tied into position to gradually build coverage across the wall or fence.

Is Wall-Hugging Cotoneaster invasive?

The RHS lists Cotoneaster horizontalis as an invasive non-native species in Great Britain. It is listed on Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Although it is not banned from sale, it is an offence to plant it or cause it to grow in the wild in Great Britain.
