Double Gean Ornamental Tree (Prunus Avium 'Plena')

Double Gean Ornamental Tree Description

The Prunus avium plena tree is a traditional flowering cherry valued for its distinctive double blossom and attractive natural form. As a deciduous ornamental tree, it provides a changing display throughout the year and can become an impressive focal point when planted in a suitable open position.

During spring, the Double Flowering Cherry tree produces numerous clusters of double white flowers along its branches.

The dense blossom creates a bright, decorative display and gives the tree its characteristic appearance. The flowers can also provide a valuable source of nectar and pollen for visiting pollinators.

After flowering, fresh green foliage develops to create a full summer canopy.

The leaves provide attractive greenery during the growing season before developing yellow and orange tones in autumn. This seasonal change adds further interest as the tree moves towards winter dormancy.

With a potential mature height of approximately 4-8 metres, the Double Gean ornamental tree is best suited to locations where it has sufficient room to establish a balanced crown.

It can be planted as a standalone specimen, incorporated into larger borders or used as part of a broader landscape scheme.

Pruning Advice

The Prunus avium plena generally benefits from only moderate maintenance pruning once established. Its natural shape can be retained by concentrating on the removal of dead, damaged, diseased or crossing branches.

If formative pruning is required while the tree is young, focus on developing a strong and well-spaced framework rather than heavily reshaping the crown.

Established trees should not be subjected to unnecessary hard pruning, as this can affect their natural appearance and future flowering.

Carry out routine pruning at an appropriate time after flowering and use clean, sharp tools to make precise cuts. Regularly checking the tree for damaged or unhealthy growth can also help maintain good overall structure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Prunus avium plena?

Prunus avium plena is an ornamental form of wild cherry grown for its attractive double spring flowers. It is commonly known as the Double Gean or Double Flowering Cherry and is valued primarily for its ornamental qualities.

Is the Double Gean the same as a Double Flowering Cherry?

Yes. Double Gean is a common name associated with Prunus avium plena, which is also referred to as the Double Flowering Cherry. Using the botanical name can help distinguish the specific tree from other ornamental flowering cherry varieties.

How much space does a Double Gean need?

A mature Double Gean tree can reach approximately 4-8 metres in height, so it should be planted where there is adequate room for the crown and root system to develop. Avoid positioning it too close to buildings, paths or other trees where its mature size could become restrictive.

Does Prunus avium plena produce cherries?

Prunus avium is associated with wild cherry, but the ornamental Prunus avium plena is primarily grown for its double flowers rather than for a crop of edible cherries. Its value in gardens is chiefly its spring blossom and overall ornamental form.

Can a Double Gean grow in partial shade?

It can tolerate some partial shade, but a position with good sunlight is preferable for strong growth and flowering. If planting in partial shade, choose a location that still receives a reasonable amount of direct light during the day and has well-drained soil.
