Photinia Little Red Robin Hedge Plants Description

Photinia Little Red Robin is a compact evergreen hedging plant with striking red young shoots that gradually mature to glossy green foliage. Also known as Photinia x fraseri ‘Little Red Robin’, it offers the attractive colouring of the popular Red Robin in a smaller, slower-growing form.

Reaching around 1m at maturity, this Little Red Robin hedge is well suited to low borders, compact garden spaces and neatly defined boundaries. Its evergreen foliage provides year-round interest, while regular trimming can encourage repeated flushes of vibrant red growth.

Benefits

Compact growth: Little Red Robin is naturally smaller than standard Photinia Red Robin, making it a practical choice for low hedges, borders and smaller gardens.

Evergreen foliage: Glossy green leaves remain throughout the year, providing consistent colour and structure in the garden.

Attractive red growth: Fresh red shoots provide seasonal contrast against the mature green foliage and can appear more frequently with regular trimming.

Versatile planting: Photinia Little Red Robin can be used for formal or informal hedging and is also suitable for growing in containers.

Suitable for different locations: It grows well in full sun or partial shade and can tolerate both exposed and sheltered positions, including many coastal locations.

Pruning Advice

Pruning Little Red Robin hedge plants helps maintain their compact shape and encourages fresh red shoots. The first light trim can be carried out in late spring or early summer, after the initial flush of new growth has developed.

Further light trimming during the growing season can encourage additional red foliage and maintain a dense, tidy appearance. Avoid heavy pruning towards late autumn, as tender new growth may be more vulnerable to frost.

For a low, formal hedge, regular light pruning is generally preferable to infrequent heavy cuts.

Further Information

The ideal planting distance depends on the size of the plants, the desired density and whether you are creating a single or staggered row.

For bare root Photinia Little Red Robin plants, approximately 3 plants per metre can provide sufficient coverage, while 5 plants per metre is an optimal density for a fuller hedge. Planting 7 plants per metre in a double staggered row can create a denser hedge more quickly. Smaller plants are generally best planted at a higher density.

For cell-grown plants, 4 plants per metre in a single row or ideally 6 plants per metre in a staggered row is recommended.
When planting, prepare the ground thoroughly and water the plants well after planting. Keeping the soil adequately moist while the plants establish will help support healthy root development.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Photinia Little Red Robin suitable for a small garden?

Yes. Its compact growth and mature height of around 1m make it particularly useful where a smaller hedge is preferred. It can also be used for low borders and defined garden areas.

Does Little Red Robin stay red all year?

No. The vivid red colour appears on the plant's fresh new growth. These leaves gradually mature to glossy green, while the evergreen foliage remains on the plant throughout the year.

Can Photinia Little Red Robin be grown in a pot?

Yes. Its compact habit makes it suitable for container growing, provided the container offers enough room for the roots and has adequate drainage. Regular watering is particularly important for plants grown in containers.

How long does it take for Little Red Robin to form a hedge?

The time required depends on the starting plant size, planting density, growing conditions and maintenance. As it has a slow growth rate of approximately 8–15cm per year, it is suited to gardeners looking for a manageable, low-growing hedge rather than rapid screening.

Does Photinia Little Red Robin provide privacy?

It can provide useful coverage when planted and maintained as a dense hedge. However, because it reaches around 1m at maturity, it is more appropriate for low-level screening, boundaries and garden definition than for creating a tall privacy screen.
