Himalayan Cotoneaster Hedge Plant Description

Himalayan Cotoneaster (Cotoneaster simonsii) is an upright, bushy shrub with small, glossy dark green leaves. The foliage can be retained for much of the year, while some or all of the leaves may be lost during colder periods.

In summer, Himalayan Cotoneaster produces clusters of small white flowers with a pink tinge. These are followed by bright scarlet berries in autumn, adding colour to the hedge and providing food for wildlife.

Its upright growth habit makes Cotoneaster simonsii suitable for informal hedging and screening. It can be maintained at a lower height with regular pruning, or allowed to develop into a larger shrub where more space is available.

For the best results, plant Himalayan Cotoneaster in full sun and well-drained soil. It tolerates a range of soil types, including chalk, clay, loam and sand, and can grow in both sheltered and exposed positions.

Pruning Advice

Himalayan Cotoneaster generally requires only light pruning, particularly when it is being grown as an informal hedge. Regular trimming can be used to control the height and width while encouraging a neat, well-shaped plant.

For established hedges, prune in spring or after flowering to remove overlong shoots and maintain the desired outline. If a more formal shape is required, the hedge can be clipped in spring and again during summer to keep the growth even and tidy.

Avoid hard pruning in late summer, as this can remove wood that would otherwise flower the following year.If the plant has become significantly overgrown, renovation pruning can be carried out in early spring. This involves removing older growth to reduce the size and reshape the plant, but flowering will be reduced until the new growth has matured.

Remove dead, damaged or unwanted branches as necessary. Before pruning an established hedge, check carefully for active bird nests and delay cutting if necessary. Newly planted Himalayan Cotoneaster should be allowed to establish before undertaking regular shaping.

Further Information

Himalayan Cotoneaster is a useful choice for informal hedging and screening where seasonal flowers and berries are also desirable. Its upright, bushy growth gives the plant a more structured appearance, while the flowers and bright berries add colour through the warmer months and into autumn.

The small flowers provide a source of nectar for pollinating insects, while the berries are attractive to birds. Cotoneasters generally produce more flowers and berries when grown in full sun, although they can tolerate some shade.

For the best results, plant Himalayan Cotoneaster in well-drained soil and water it thoroughly after planting. Keep the soil moist during dry periods while the plants establish, particularly during their first two years. Once established, Cotoneasters are generally tolerant of drier conditions and require relatively little routine care.

If planting Himalayan Cotoneaster close to a wall or fence, leave sufficient space for the roots to receive rainfall and for the plant to develop properly. The RHS recommends planting the root ball at least 45cm away from a wall or fence to allow rain to reach the roots.

Important: Cotoneaster simonsii is listed as an invasive non-native species in Great Britain and is included on Schedule 9 of the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981.

Although it is not banned from sale, it is an offence to plant it or cause it to grow in the wild in Great Britain. Consider alternative planting where gardens border open countryside or ecologically sensitive sites.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Himalayan Cotoneaster suitable for hedging?

Yes. Himalayan Cotoneaster has an upright, bushy growth habit that makes it suitable for informal hedges and screening. It can also be pruned to maintain a more defined height and shape.

Is Himalayan Cotoneaster evergreen?

Himalayan Cotoneaster is semi-evergreen. Its foliage can remain on the plant for much of the year, although it may lose some or all of its leaves during colder conditions.

How fast does Himalayan Cotoneaster grow?

Himalayan Cotoneaster has an average growth rate of approximately 20–40cm per year. Regular pruning can be used to keep an established hedge within the required height and width.

How tall does Himalayan Cotoneaster grow?

Himalayan Cotoneaster can reach approximately 1.5–2.5m in height when allowed to develop naturally. As a hedge, it can be maintained at a lower height with regular pruning.

When does Himalayan Cotoneaster flower?

Himalayan Cotoneaster produces small white flowers with a pink tinge during summer. These are followed by bright scarlet berries in autumn, adding further seasonal interest.

Does Himalayan Cotoneaster produce berries?

Yes. The plant produces bright scarlet berries after flowering. They provide food for birds and add colour to the hedge during autumn. The berries are ornamental and should not be eaten.

Where should Himalayan Cotoneaster be planted?

Choose a position in full sun with well-drained soil for the best results. It tolerates chalk, clay, loam and sandy soils and can grow in both sheltered and exposed positions. Cotoneasters can tolerate some shade, although flowering and berry production are generally better in sunnier positions. Very wet soil should be avoided.

When should Himalayan Cotoneaster be pruned?

Light pruning can be carried out in spring or after flowering. Informal hedges can be maintained by removing long growth after flowering, while formal hedges may benefit from clipping in spring and again during summer. Avoid hard pruning in late summer where possible.

Is Himalayan Cotoneaster invasive?

Yes. Cotoneaster simonsii is classed as an invasive non-native species in Great Britain and is subject to restrictions under Schedule 9 of the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981. It should not be planted or allowed to spread into the wild.
