Planting Conditions Pony Tails Grass grows best in full sun and well drained soil. Choose an open position where air can circulate around the foliage, and avoid areas that remain waterlogged, particularly during winter. It is well suited to gravel gardens, sunny borders and free draining planting beds. Water regularly after planting to help the roots establish, then adjust watering according to rainfall and soil conditions.
Growth Rate Stipa tenuissima forms a clump of slender, hair-like leaves that create a soft, flowing appearance. Its feathery foliage adds texture throughout the growing season, while its delicate flower heads provide additional interest. The grass may self-seed in suitable conditions. Description

Pony Tails Ornamental Grass is an excellent option for creating natural movement and texture in garden borders. Its fine foliage contrasts beautifully with broad-leaved plants, colourful flowers and more structured shrubs.

This feathery ornamental grass is suitable for contemporary gardens, informal borders, gravel planting and naturalistic landscapes. Plant it in small groups for a flowing effect or use it alongside other ornamental grasses for borders to create a layered display.

If you are looking to buy Pony Tails Grass in the UK, Stipa tenuissima offers an attractive option for sunny gardens with good drainage. Its graceful form and relatively simple care requirements make it a useful addition to many planting schemes.

Pruning Advice

Tidy Pony Tails Grass by removing dead or damaged foliage when needed. In spring, gently comb through the clump with gloved hands to remove loose, old leaves.

Avoid cutting deeply into the crown, as this may damage new growth. Check for unwanted seedlings and remove them if you want to prevent the grass from spreading beyond its intended planting area.

Yes. Its fine foliage and flowing shape complement clean lines, gravel surfaces and contemporary planting schemes.

Yes. It can soften pathway edges and create a natural border, provided there is enough room for the foliage to spread without obstructing the walkway.

3. Does Pony Tails Grass tolerate dry conditions?

Once established, it can tolerate some dry periods. However, newly planted grass needs regular watering until its roots become established.
