Alder Hedge (Alnus glutinosa) Description

alder glutinosa produces attractive catkins in spring, followed by small woody cones in autumn. Its dense foliage creates an effective natural screen while providing valuable shelter and habitat for birds, butterflies, moths, caterpillars and other wildlife.
One of the main advantages of Alder is its tolerance of very wet conditions.

Established plants can cope with standing water of up to approximately 30cm, making them particularly suitable for damp gardens, waterside areas and locations prone to waterlogging.

Alder can also grow in relatively poor soils and has the ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen, helping to improve soil fertility. It can be planted as a single-species hedge or incorporated into a mixed native hedge for greater biodiversity.

With growth of 60cm or more per year in suitable conditions, Alder is a practical option for creating a fast-growing natural boundary, screen or windbreak.

Pruning Advice

Alder hedges should generally be pruned in late autumn, after the main growing season has finished. This helps maintain the shape and size of the hedge while encouraging a neat and dense appearance.

Alder is unusual among deciduous plants because it can start developing new shoots towards the latter part of winter, before the new growth is clearly visible. For this reason, avoid carrying out major pruning too late in winter.

For Alder grown specifically as a hedge, regular maintenance trimming can help control its height and spread. Remove damaged, dead or crossing branches where necessary and avoid removing excessive growth at one time.

Further Information

How many Alder plants do I need per metre?
Planting density depends on the plant size, root type and the finished appearance you want to achieve. The recommended densities for each available plant size are shown in the product grid.

As a general guide:
Bare root Alder: approximately 3-7 plants per metre
Cell-grown Alder: approximately 4-6 plants per metre
For a denser screen, you may wish to consider a double staggered row or zig-zag planting arrangement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Alder a good hedge plant for wet soil?
Yes. Alder is particularly well suited to wet, poorly drained and waterlogged soils, making it a useful hedging choice for areas where many other plants may find conditions difficult.

How fast does Alder hedging grow?
Alder is a fast-growing hedging plant that can achieve 60cm or more of growth per year under suitable growing conditions. Growth rates can vary depending on soil, moisture, sunlight and establishment.

Can Alder grow in waterlogged ground?
Yes. Alder has a strong tolerance for wet conditions and established plants can cope with standing water of approximately 30cm deep. This makes it particularly useful for some pond-side, riverside and waterlogged areas.

Is Alder suitable for a wildlife-friendly hedge?
Yes. Alder provides valuable habitat and shelter for a range of wildlife, including birds, butterflies, moths, caterpillars and other insects. Its dense growth makes it a useful addition to a wildlife-friendly landscape.

How tall does Alder grow?
Alder can reach approximately 2-5 metres when allowed to grow naturally. When grown as a hedge, its height can be controlled through appropriate pruning and regular maintenance.

When is the best time to prune an Alder hedge?
Late autumn is generally the preferred time for general Alder hedge pruning. This helps avoid removing new growth that can begin developing towards the end of winter.

Can Alder be planted with other native hedge plants?
Yes. Alder can be combined with other suitable native hedging species to create a mixed hedge. A diverse hedge can provide additional seasonal interest and support a wider range of wildlife.
