Green Bamboo Hedge (Phyllostachys bissetii)

Green Bamboo Hedge Plant Description

Green Bamboo (Phyllostachys bissetii) is a dense, evergreen bamboo with dark green canes and narrow, mid-green leaves. The upright stems create a full appearance as the plant develops, making it well suited to hedging and screening.

The foliage remains throughout the year, providing consistent greenery in the garden.

Its strong growth and spreading habit also allow it to fill a planting area effectively when given suitable growing conditions.

This is a vigorous bamboo that spreads through underground rhizomes. It can become particularly vigorous where conditions are favourable, so its eventual spread should be considered when choosing a planting position. Where space is limited, a suitable root barrier can help restrict its growth.

Green Bamboo grows well in full sun or partial shade and prefers reasonably fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Protecting newly planted bamboo from cold, drying winds can help it establish successfully.

With regular maintenance, Phyllostachys bissetii can be used to create a substantial evergreen hedge or screen.

Its dense foliage and upright growth make it a practical choice where year-round greenery is wanted.

Pruning Advice

Green Bamboo can be pruned to maintain the height and shape of the hedge as it develops. If the plants become too tall, the canes can be shortened to the height you require.

As the bamboo becomes denser, remove some of the older canes at the base to create more space and show the stems more clearly. Dead or damaged canes can also be removed when necessary.

As Phyllostachys bissetii can spread through underground rhizomes, it is worth checking around the hedge from time to time for unwanted shoots. Remove any growth that appears outside the area you want the bamboo to occupy, or use a suitable root barrier if you need to restrict its spread.

Further Information

Green Bamboo is best planted where it has enough room to establish and develop into a dense hedge or screen. Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with moist but well-drained soil.

Water the plants thoroughly after planting and continue to water during dry periods while they become established. Keeping the soil from drying out will help support healthy growth, particularly during the early stages.

As Phyllostachys bissetii can become vigorous in favourable conditions, consider using a suitable root barrier if space is limited.

This can help restrict the spread of the underground rhizomes and keep the bamboo within its intended planting area.
