Green Bamboo Hedge Plant Description

Green Bamboo is an ideal choice for a low-maintenance, tall hedge. This evergreen plant grows rapidly and features robust, attractive canes. It can become invasive, so it's best suited for spacious areas or confined to a large pot (even underground). Alternatively, you can grow it in slightly dry soil, though this is not its preferred condition. Under optimal conditions, Green Bamboo can reach up to 6 meters in height. To promote maximum growth, plant it slightly below ground level—about an inch or two—to create a dish that retains rainwater around the base.

Green Bamboo may take one to two years to fully establish, requiring consistent watering and biannual feeding in late spring after the initial shoots have reached their full height. It thrives in full sun or partial shade and grows approximately 60 to 90 cm per year.

Phyllostachys bissetii, with its green canes and foliage year-round, remains a popular choice, especially for creating privacy screens.

Pruning Advice

Green Bamboo grows rapidly, so regular pruning is essential to maintain its desired shape. In spring, remove any dead or dying stems and trim new shoots to match the established height of the plant. For overall hedge maintenance, trim twice a year—once in early June and again in late September.
