Yellow Dogwood Hedge (Cornus stolonifera 'Flaviramea')

Yellow Dogwood Plants Description

Yellow Stemmed Dogwood also known as Cornus stolonifera 'Flaviramea', is valued for its distinctive yellow-green stems, which provide strong colour during the autumn and winter months.

As a deciduous shrub, it loses its leaves in autumn, allowing the colourful stems to become particularly prominent through winter.
The green foliage develops red or orange autumn colour before falling. Small near-white flowers appear in spring and summer, followed by white berries in autumn, providing additional seasonal interest.

The 'Flaviramea' cultivar has a suckering growth habit and can form a spreading group of stems over time. **Yellow Dogwood hedging** is suitable for screening and mixed planting, particularly where colourful winter stems are desirable.

Yellow Dogwood grows well in full sun or partial shade and can adapt to chalk, clay, loam and sandy soils. It prefers moist but well-drained conditions and can tolerate both exposed and sheltered positions.

Our Yellow Dogwood plants are available as bare-root and pot-grown options in a selection of sizes. Yellow Dogwood hedge plants should be selected according to the size and planting density required, so check the individual product listing when planning your order.

Pruning Advice

Yellow Dogwood is best hard pruned when it is being grown primarily for its colourful young stems. Newly planted specimens should be allowed to establish before hard pruning begins.

Once established, prune in late winter or early spring to encourage vigorous new stems. For the strongest winter stem colour, cut the stems back hard to around 5–7.5cm above ground level. This encourages fresh young growth, which generally develops the best stem colour.

If you prefer to retain some of the existing framework, older stems can instead be removed selectively at the base. This allows new shoots to develop while maintaining a more established structure.

Further Information

Yellow Dogwood is available in bare-root and pot-grown formats. The current range includes bare-root plants from 40/60cm to 60/80cm and pot-grown plants in 2L and 5L sizes, with some options reaching 80/100cm.

For the current range, 40/60cm plants are recommended at 4–5 plants per metre, 60/80cm plants at 3–4 plants per metre and 80/100cm plants at 3 plants per metre. These recommendations apply according to the individual size and format selected.

When planting Yellow Dogwood, choose a position in full sun or partial shade with suitable, well-drained soil. Water newly planted plants regularly while they establish, particularly during dry periods.

For the strongest winter stem colour, maintain a regular pruning routine once the plants are established. Hard pruning encourages fresh young stems that provide the most noticeable colour during the dormant season.
