White Escallonia Hedge (Escallonia 'Iveyi')

Escallonia Iveyi (White) Hedge Plants Description

Escallonia Iveyi is a reliable evergreen hedging plant valued for its dense foliage, attractive flowers and versatility. Its dark green leaves provide year-round structure, while the white flowers add seasonal interest from summer into early autumn.

As an Escallonia hedge, it works well for defining garden boundaries, creating privacy and adding structure to planting schemes. Its tolerance of exposed and coastal conditions also makes it suitable for gardens where wind and salt exposure can be a concern.

Escallonia Iveyi grows well in full sun or partial shade and performs best in reasonably well-drained soil. Once established, it is relatively straightforward to maintain. Regular trimming helps create a neat, dense hedge, while pruning after flowering encourages fresh growth and maintains the desired shape.

Pruning Advice

For established Escallonia hedge plants, carry out the main hedge trim shortly after flowering has finished.

This helps maintain a tidy shape without removing the following season's flowers too early.

If a more substantial reduction is required, Escallonia can also tolerate harder pruning in early spring, around April to May. Avoid removing too much growth at once from older or neglected plants; gradual renovation is generally preferable.

Further Information

Planting density depends on the size of the plants, the finished hedge you want and how quickly you would like it to fill out.

For bare root Escallonia hedge plants, the following spacing can be used as a guide:

• 3 plants per metre: Suitable for a more economical planting scheme
• 5 plants per metre: A good choice for establishing a fuller hedge
• 7 plants per metre: Suitable for a denser hedge, particularly when planted in a double staggered row

For cell-grown plants, approximately 4 plants per metre in a single row or 6 plants per metre in a staggered row is recommended.

When planting, prepare the ground thoroughly and water plants regularly during their establishment period. Mulching around the base can also help retain soil moisture and reduce competition from weeds.

FAQs

1. Is Escallonia Iveyi a good hedge plant?

Yes. Escallonia Iveyi is well suited to hedging because it is evergreen, produces dense foliage and responds well to regular pruning. It can provide year-round structure while its white flowers add seasonal interest.

2. Does Escallonia Iveyi lose its leaves in winter?

Escallonia Iveyi is generally evergreen, so it retains its foliage throughout winter. In particularly harsh conditions, some leaf damage or loss can occur, but established plants usually recover as growing conditions improve.

3. How long does an Escallonia hedge take to establish?

Establishment time varies depending on plant size, spacing, soil conditions and aftercare. With suitable growing conditions and consistent watering during establishment, Escallonia can develop into a dense hedge over time.

4. Can Escallonia Iveyi be grown in containers?

Yes, Escallonia Iveyi can be grown in a large container, provided it has adequate drainage and enough space for the roots to develop. Container-grown plants generally require more frequent watering than those planted in the ground.

5. Is Escallonia Iveyi suitable for windy gardens?

Escallonia Iveyi can be a suitable choice for exposed gardens once established and is particularly valued for its tolerance of coastal conditions. However, newly planted hedges should be protected from severe exposure while their root systems develop.
