Weeping Cherry Snow Fountains Ornamental Tree (Prunus 'Snow Fountains')

Weeping Cherry 'Snow Fountains' Ornamental Tree Description

The Weeping Cherry 'Snow Fountains' is a deciduous ornamental tree known for its elegant downward-growing branches and compact, naturally cascading form.

Its distinctive silhouette makes it particularly effective as a standalone feature, where the branches can develop without being crowded by surrounding plants.

In spring, the tree produces an abundance of small, pure white flowers along its weeping branches.

The flowers create a striking display that gives the variety its 'Snow Fountains' name and can attract bees and other pollinating insects.

After flowering, fresh green leaves emerge and provide a soft, attractive canopy through summer.

As autumn approaches, the foliage can develop warm yellow and orange tones before falling, revealing the tree's graceful branching structure during winter.

The manageable proportions of this weeping cherry tree make it suitable for a range of garden settings.

It can be planted as a focal point on a lawn, incorporated into an ornamental border or positioned near a patio where its seasonal display can be appreciated.

When selecting a planting location, consider the tree's eventual height and spread rather than its size when newly planted.

Providing adequate room allows the branches to develop their characteristic cascading habit and reduces the need for unnecessary pruning.

Pruning Advice

The Prunus 'Snow Fountains' naturally develops a weeping shape, so extensive pruning is rarely necessary. Routine maintenance should focus on keeping the tree healthy while preserving its distinctive cascading form.

Prune out dead, damaged or diseased branches when necessary. Crossing or rubbing branches can also be removed to maintain good airflow and prevent unnecessary damage.

For general shaping, light pruning is best carried out after flowering and during the appropriate summer pruning period for ornamental cherries.

Avoid excessive cutting of the main framework, as heavy pruning can alter the tree's natural appearance and may affect future flowering.

Before making any cuts, identify the natural structure of the tree and remove only growth that genuinely needs attention. Mature specimens or substantial branches may require professional pruning.
