For bare root plants, 3 per metre is the minimum, 5 per metre is ideal, and 7 per metre in a double staggered row gives a thicker hedge faster.

As a rule, smaller plants go in closer together.

Cell-grown plants do best at 4 per metre in a single row, or ideally 6 per metre in a staggered row.
