Star Jasmine Plants Description

Star Jasmine Hedge Plants (Trachelospermum jasminoides) are evergreen climbers with glossy, dark green foliage and slender, twining stems. Once established against a suitable support, the stems can spread to create an attractive screen, while the foliage remains through the winter.

The main ornamental feature is its fragrant, star-shaped white flowers, which appear in summer and can attract bees and other pollinating insects. During colder months, the foliage can develop bronze-red tones, adding seasonal colour.

Star Jasmine is best suited to a warm, sheltered position, particularly against a sunny wall where it can benefit from additional warmth. It prefers fertile, well-drained soil and can tolerate partial shade, although flowering may be reduced.

As a twining climber, it needs a suitable support such as a trellis, fence or wall for the stems to grow against. With regular training and pruning, it can be kept within the space available and used for screening or as a decorative hedge.

Pruning Advice

Star Jasmine can be pruned as required to control its size, maintain its shape and keep growth within the available space.

For established plants, carry out routine pruning in spring, removing any dead, damaged or unwanted growth and shortening overlong shoots. The stems can also be guided back onto their support where necessary.

Young plants should be allowed to establish before extensive pruning begins. Regular light pruning and training can help develop an even covering across a trellis, fence or wall.

If an established plant has become overgrown, it can be cut back more substantially in spring.

Avoid removing excessive amounts of healthy growth at once, particularly on plants that have not yet established well.

Further Information

Star Jasmine Hedge plants are currently available as 5L and 10L pot-grown plants, with the available plants supplied at approximately 100/125cm. The recommended planting density is 3 plants per metre.

Star Jasmine performs best in a warm, sheltered position with good sunlight and well-drained soil. Planting against a sunny wall can provide additional warmth and protection, which is particularly useful in cooler parts of the UK.

Provide a suitable support such as a trellis, fence or wall for the stems to climb. Water newly planted plants thoroughly and keep the soil from drying out while they establish, particularly during dry periods.

In colder or exposed locations, some protection may be needed during winter. Once established in a suitable position, regular training and pruning can help keep the plant within the required space.
