Holly Silver Hedge Plants Description

Holly (Ilex aquifolium Argentea Marginata), also known as Silver Hedge Holly, is an elegant evergreen shrub with striking green leaves edged in creamy-white margins. Its spiny, glossy foliage offers year-round interest, and in autumn and winter, female plants produce bright red berries, which are a favourite of wildlife. This variety makes an excellent choice for a formal hedge, offering both privacy and a beautiful, structured appearance.

Silver Hedge Holly has a moderate growth rate, typically adding around 10-20 cm per year, making it relatively easy to manage and maintain. It can reach a mature height of around 4-6 metres but can be pruned to your desired size and shape.

Pruning Advice

For best results, prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Regular pruning will help maintain a dense, bushy shape. Be sure to remove any damaged or dead wood, and trim lightly to keep the plant looking tidy.

Planting distances are largely a matter of preference. For bare root plants, spacing them at 3 plants per metre is sufficient, 5 plants is optimal, and 7 plants in a double staggered row will result in a denser hedge more quickly. Generally, smaller plants should be planted at a higher density. For cell-grown plants, spacing at 4 plants per metre in a single row or ideally 6 plants per metre in a staggered row is recommended.
