Sea Buckthorn Hedging Description

Sea Buckthorn, known botanically as Hippophae rhamnoides, is a hardy deciduous shrub prized for its bright orange berries and silvery-green leaves.

Gardeners often plant it as an informal hedge, valued as much for its looks as for how little it asks of you.

Well suited to coastal gardens and other tough sites, it makes a great pick for anyone wanting a hedge that stays low-maintenance while still bringing seasonal colour and supporting local wildlife.

Benefits:

Nutrient-rich berries: Small, tangy orange berries appear in abundance, packed with vitamins, antioxidants and essential fatty acids. They're edible too, often turned into juices, jams or oils.

Wildlife-friendly: The thick, dense growth gives birds and small mammals somewhere to shelter, while the berries feed birds through the winter months.

Drought and salt tolerance: A deep root system lets this shrub cope with poor, sandy ground, salty coastal air and dry spells that would trouble less hardy plants.

Erosion control: That same deep root network helps hold soil in place, making it a sound choice for slopes and coastal banks.

Aesthetic appeal: Vivid orange berries against silvery foliage keep the hedge visually interesting right through the year.

Pruning Advice

Keep a Sea Buckthorn hedge healthy and well-shaped with regular pruning, ideally in late winter or early spring before new growth starts. Cut out any dead, damaged or diseased wood and thin crowded sections to let air move through the plant.

A light trim keeps the shape neat and encourages denser growth. For an overgrown hedge, a harder cutback can help, but avoid removing too much at once, as this can put the plant under stress. Clean your tools afterwards to avoid spreading disease between plants.

With its bold berries, wildlife value and easy-going nature, Sea Buckthorn makes a fine choice for anyone wanting a hedge that does more than just mark a boundary.

Further Information

Spacing comes down to personal preference. For bare root plants, 3 per metre will do the job, 5 per metre is a good middle ground, and 7 per metre in a double staggered row builds a thicker hedge more quickly.

As a general rule, smaller plants suit closer spacing. Cell-grown plants are best at 4 per metre in a single row, or 6 per metre staggered for a denser result.
